Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Women’s Lacrosse Bested by League-Leading Fairfield Saturday

Kelly Horning tallied five points to pace Fairfield in a 12-9 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's lacrosse action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in downtown Buffalo.

Horning posted a hat trick and added two assists to highlight a balanced attack for the Stags (6-0, 6-0 MAAC), who remained in first place in the league standings with Saturday's victory. Three players - Diana DeVita (2g, 2a), Meaghan Graham (1g, 3a) and Ellie Grefenstette (4g) - pitched in four points each while Brooke Lennon added a pair of goals for the visitors.

Freshman Riley Davis recorded a hat trick and junior Katie Smolensky finished with a goal and two assists for the Golden Griffins (1-4, 1-4 MAAC). Senior Miranda Malvaso chipped in two goals while fellow senior Marissa Malvaso and sophomore Paige Stachura added individual markers.

Canisius opened the scoring with a goal from Davis in the opening minute of action before the Stags responded with six unanswered goals during more than 12-minute span midway through the frame to build a 6-1 cushion.

Stachura halted the Fairfield surge with her ninth of the campaign at the 11:35 mark, trimming the Griffs' deficit to 6-2 and igniting Canisius to a 4-1 run to close out the half to make it a 7-5 contest at the break.

Horning opened the second half scoring to push the Stags advantage back to three, 8-5, but the Griffs once again countered with another spurt, this using a goal from Miranda Malvaso and a pair of tallies from Smolensky to pull within one, 9-8, with 14:15 remaining.

Grefenstette completed her hat trick a little more than a minute after Smolensky's second strike to restore the Stags two-goal cushion, but Davis answered for Canisius with her third goal of the day to make it a one-goal game again, 10-9, with exactly five minutes to play.

That would be as close as the Griffs would get, however, as Fairfield put the game away with a pair of insurance markers from Grefenstette and Horning in the final minute to determine the three-goal margin of victory.

Olivia Conquest made nine saves in goal for Fairfield to record her sixth victory of the season. Junior Lauren Gilbert recorded five saves between the pipes for Canisius.

Head Coach Allison Daley's Postgame Comments
"We competed hard today. That's something that we get out of our team is our ability to compete because of our work ethic. We gave up a stretch of goals in the first half that forced us to battle back and it's nice to see our team do that, to be able to be resilient and to be able to come out and battle back from being down, but we need to continue to work on competing for 60 minutes. If we don't let Fairfield go on its run early in the first half, then it's a different game down the stretch. But we'll take the positives, that we were able to be battle back, we were able to keep it a close game and compete with a very strong team and a top team in the MAAC. But we need to continue to work on competing for 60 minutes.

"We've been in close games in nearly every game, except for one this season and that just comes with working through our experiences and our decision making. We learn best from when we play and when we compete, so we're getting closer and closer to where we want to be as a team. We were able to again get within striking distance going down the stretch there and there'll be some things that we'll look at from the tape and we'll work to improve upon before we turn our focus to our next opponent. As a coaching staff, we feel that our team continues to get better and better with each game that we play and that's something that we want to keep seeing as we progress through the second half of the season."
