Women’s Lacrosse Clipped by Niagara

Game Recap
The Canisius women's lacrosse team was defeated by "Battle of the Bridge" rival Niagara, 16-9, Tuesday in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y..

Canisius senior Marissa Malvaso tied her career-high with four goals in the effort to pace the Golden Griffins (1-5, 1-5 MAAC). Freshman Riley Davis found the back of the net twice on the night, her third consecutive contest with multiple goals. Seniors Emma Mryglod and Aldyn Savage, as well as freshman Avery Penoyer each tallied one goal apiece for the Golden Griffins.

For the Purple Eagles (3-3, 3-3 MAAC), Shea Swartwout highlighted the Niagara attack with five goals on the evening. Her teammate, Rachel Crane, posted a hat trick of her own in the winning effort.

Niagara scored the first goal of the matchup on an unassisted goal by Swartwout at the 25:47 mark, but Malvaso would answer for Canisius with a score at 23:25 with the assist courtesy of Davis. Niagara used a 6-0 run over the next 15 minutes to push their lead out to 7-1.

The Griffs entered halftime trailing 10-3, following Malvaso's second score of the night and a goal by Savage with 3:25 remaining in the opening frame. Following the break, the Purple Eagles found the back of the net for the first four goals of the second half, extending their lead to 14-3.

Canisius responded behind Davis' back-to-back goals on consecutive possessions to trim the deficit to 14-5. Over the final 13:34 of the contest, the Griffs outscored Niagara 4-2, but the effort was not enough as the Purple Eagles took the first of three straight matchups between the two Western New York rivals.

Head Coach Allison Daley's Postgame Comments
"Credit goes to Niagara tonight, they were hands down the better team on the field. They came ready to play and ready to perform. We didn't execute our scout and struggled to capitalize on offense. We had to play a ton of defense in the first half and Niagara capitalized on its momentum and opportunities."

"We have to make some adjustments offensively. Going into Friday we need to execute defensively and shut down their top players. We need to improve on focusing on what we do best and build on our strengths going forward."

Game Notes

• Canisius still holds the all-time series lead over Niagara 17-11. The loss snaps Canisius' 17-game winning streak in the rivalry.
• With her four goal performance, Marissa Malvaso extended her point streak to 21 contests. The Syracuse, N.Y., native has registered a point in 32 of the last 33 games for the Blue and Gold.
• Senior goalkeeper Emily Van Kessel earned her first career start in the cage Tuesday night.
• Freshman Avery Penoyer tallied the first two points of her collegiate career in the defeat.
