Women's Soccer Defeated by Monmouth

Game Recap
Monmouth freshman Lauren Bruno posted her first three career points with a goal and an assist as the host Hawks defeated Canisius 3-0 Tuesday afternoon in MAAC women's soccer action at Hesse Field in West Long Branch, N.J.

The victory moves the Hawks to 2-0-1 on the season, while the Golden Griffins fell to a 0-3-0 start to the 2021 spring campaign.

The Griffs played stride-for-stride with Monmouth through the first 27 minutes of play, with neither team registering a shot. However, in the game's 28th minute, Monmouth's Maddison Perna put the Hawks up 1-0 as she scored her second goal of the season on the first shot of the contest. Perna's goal came off an assist for Bruno, who would later push Monmouth's cushion to 2-0 in the contest's 32nd minute with an unassisted goal.

Out of the halftime break, Monmouth stretched its lead to 3-0 after junior Jesi Rossman tucked a shot in the upper left-hand corner of the net in the 48th minute. That would end the scoring for the day as Monmouth closed out the game with a 9-5 advantage in shots to go with a 14-2 advantage in corner-kick opportunities.

Canisius freshman goalkeeper Jessica Jones made two stops in the loss for the Blue and Gold while Monmouth freshman keeper Rebecca Winslow made three stops en route to her first career victory.

Interim Head Coach Ryan Louis' Postgame Comments
"I thought it was another improvement from our last game. There were a lot of positives that we can take from this. Even though we conceded three [goals], I think that little changes can eliminate those in the future. We are really happy with the effort level and competitiveness, and are excited to get back at it on Saturday against Siena.
"
