Canisius Defeats Monmouth in Home Opener

Game Recap
Canisius senior Marissa Malvaso's game-winning goal in overtime helped the Golden Griffins complete the second-half comeback over MAAC opponent Monmouth Saturday afternoon at the Demske Sports Complex.

Allison Turturro's second goal of the afternoon for the Hawks (2-2, 2-2 MAAC) with 17:43 remaining in regulation would give Monmouth their largest lead of the contest, 14-7. For the remainder of the game, Canisius (1-3, 1-3 MAAC) would out-score the Hawks 9-1, capped off by Malvaso's game-winner in overtime to give the Blue & Gold their first victory of 2021.

Canisius started the second-half spurt with 16:44 remaining in regulation, courtesy of Skylar McArthur's first goal of the campaign. Teammate Miranda Malvaso followed immediately with her first of three goals on the day with 15:24 on the clock, cutting the deficit to 14-9. Turturro would win the ensuing draw control for the Hawks and race down the field, answering the Canisius back-to-back goals with Monmouth's final tally in the scoring column on the day to make it a six-goal contest.

Miranda Malvaso's second score of the day, followed by her sister Marissa Malvaso's goal with 12:38 remaining, helped the Golden Griffins to continue chipping away at the Hawks advantage. The score remained 15-11 until Paige Stachura's free-position goal with 7:35 left in regulation helped Canisius pull within three.

With just under four and a half minutes remaining, freshman Riley Davis would net her second goal of the afternoon, coming from a pass courtesy of teammate Miranda Malvaso. The stellar play from the Griffs continued as freshman Steph Herrnreiter notched her second goal of the contest with 2:42 remaining got the home team within one.

Canisius tied the score at 15-all when Miranda Malvaso found the back of the net with 1:42 remaining in regulation. Following the Malvaso goal, both teams came up empty on their final possession of regulation, sending the game to overtime.

A back-and-forth defensive effort in the overtime period , until Marissa Malvaso struck for the game-winning goal on an unassisted effort, lifting the Blue & Gold to their first victory of the season.

The balanced offensive attack for Canisius was the case Saturday afternoon once again. Stachura and Miranda Malvaso led the Griffs with three goals each. Katie Smolensky, Marissa Malvaso, Davis and Herrnreiter each found the back of the net twice on the day. Rounding out the scoring for the Blue & Gold was Emma Mryglod and McArthur, each with their first goal of the year.

Caroline Bleck and Rachel Mills each had four goals for Monmouth on the day. Turturro would contribute with a hat trick and Nicole Ceraso would find the net twice.

Head Coach
Allison Daley's Postgame Comments
"I could not be prouder of our team today. We showed a lot of resiliency and that's something we've talked to our team about since the beginning of the season, and we showed that this week. Originally preparing for Marist and then having to take a detour and prepare for Monmouth, we definitely showed that resiliency. We've talked about having the belief in ourselves and each other, and we saw that when we were down and battled back. I'm extremely proud of every single member of our program today."

"The 9-1 run was obviously important to us. As a coaching staff, we've been telling our players that our record wasn't a representation of the team that we had. I think in that 9-1 run you saw the team and saw the product that we have on the field. We have a lot of talent and we continue to have a ton of grit, resiliency and pride in Canisius. That was without a doubt on display today."

"I thought our defense down the stretch did a really great job of making adjustments at a timeout when we were down. To hold them on two defensive stances late in the game with less than a minute left, and then two great defensive stops in overtime really sparked that momentum for us on the offensive end. I thought it was a complete team win from start to finish."

"It's always nice to get that first win and it's something that we've been fighting and working for. Today's going to give us confidence moving forward. Once again we have a great team that we have to face next weekend in Fairfield. We'll certainly enjoy this but we'll get right back to work on Monday."
