Softball Splits To Open Season Against Monmouth

The Canisius softball team split its season-opening doubleheader at Monmouth in West Long Branch, N.J., on Saturday.

Serving as the season-opening contests for both programs, the Golden Griffins fell, 5-4, in walk-off fashion in nine innings in game one. The Griffs had an offensive explosion in game two, putting 11 runs on the board to split the series with an 11-0 shutout in the nightcap.

GAME 1

The Griffs shocked the Hawks early with dynamic offensive assistance from both the freshmen and returning seniors.

Scoring began early in the first inning when freshman Christie McGee-Ross made her way across home plate on a wild pitch.

Returning senior Sue Vi sent a triple into center field to start the third inning, which led to a second Canisius run when she stole home.  Vi was not the only Griff to hit a triple in game one, as senior Samantha Crane also sent the ball flying to the left field fence to open the top of the fourth. With Crane on third and no outs, freshman Sydney Costan laid the perfect bunt to get herself to first and Crane across the plate to make it 3-0 Griffs.

However, when Monmouth stepped to the plate in the bottom of the fourth, senior Erika Coreth homered past the left field fence to cut the Griffs lead to 3-1.

Canisius added to its lead in the top of th fifth on a RBI double from Lindsi Dennis, but Monmouth responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning on a run-scoring double to centerfield from freshman Julia Thuer that plated two and a RBI groundout by Thuer to tie the game at 4-4.

The game remained deadlocked throughout the remaining three innings, forcing extra frames. Though opportunities presented themselves for both teams, Monmouth's Thuer ended the contest in the bottom half of the ninth with a home run over the center field fence to claim game one by a 5-4 margin.

Game 2
Canisius started game two of the twinball in similar fashion with an early RBI double from senior Morgan Altman in the first inning to grab an early 1-0 edge.

The Griffs added to its lead in the top of the fifth, using a pair of Monmouth fielding errors and Dennis' second double of the day to bring home three runs to build a 4-0 advantage.

The Griffs put the game out of reach in the top of the sixth, exploding for seven runs on four hits, highlighted by a two-run double from rookie Gianna Fazzolari, to seal their victory over Monmouth.

Senior pitcher Emily Nicosia, who stepped in for Alexis Churchill in game one, earned 12 strikeouts across six innings of play as she scattered two hits and two walks to earn the win.

Notes
• Nicosia's 12-strikeout performance serves as a career high for the East Amherst, N.Y., native.
• The Canisius freshmen, consisting of Christie McGee-Ross, Gianna Fazzolari, Sydney Costan and Destiny Falquez, all had hits in their collegiate debuts.
• Game two featured five doubles from five different players.
