Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Closes Out Opening Weekend at Monmouth

The Canisius softball team dropped a pair of one-run games at Monmouth University in West Long Branch, N.J., on Sunday, as the Golden Griffins and Hawks closed out their four-game series to open the 2021 regular-season.

The Griffs lost the first game of the day by the score of 2-1, then came up short in the nightcap, 8-7, after allowing two runs to score in the home-half of the seventh inning. Canisius is now 1-3 on the season, while Monmouth starts the year with a 3-1 mark.

GAME ONE RECAP
Monmouth struck early in the matchup. junior Lindsey Baron doubled to start the bottom of the second inning. After a wild pitch allowed Baron to advance to third, the MAAC Preseason Co-Player of the Year put her team on the board first when freshman Riley Riendeau drove her across the plate with an RBI on a fielder's choice.

Monmouth made the game 2-0 in the third when Baron singled, then advanced two bases on a Canisius error. On that play, Baron's teammate, Erika Coreth, crossed the plate for the Hawks' final run of the contest.

Thse two runs would be enough support for Monmouth pitcher Alyssa Irons, who picked up her second win of the season after she went the distance, allowing just one run on four hits to go with four strikeouts. Canisius cut the Monmouth lead in half at 2-1 in the top of the fourth. Senior Kara Paradowski started that frame off with a bunt for a base hit, and then she moved herself into scoring position by stealing second base. After Irons got an out, she gave up an RBI-double to Morgan Altman. But Irons was able to keep the Griffs from tacking on any more runs in that frame by getting a strikeout and a ground-ball out to end the threat.

Seniors Samantha Crane and Sue Vi also had hits on the day for Canisius. Freshman pitcher Megan Giese was the tough-luck loser in the circle for the Griffs in her college debut. She went six innings and allowed two runs on three hits while walking four and fanning eight.

GAME TWO RECAP
In the second game of the day, the Griffs came out hot, scoring four times in the top-half of the first to lead 4-0 before Monmouth even had a chance to hit.

To open the contest, Paradowski and freshman Christie McGee-Ross executed back-to-back bunt base hits to get things rolling for the Blue and Gold. A double-steal moments later would allow Paradowski to score from third, putting the Griffs up 1-0. An RBI-single off the bat of Crane made the score 2-0 in favor of the visiting team as McGee-Ross scored on that play, and then a base hit to center field with two outs in the inning by freshman Sydney Costan pushed two more runs across to give Canisius the 4-0 advantage.

Canisius extended its lead to 5-0 in the top of the second after Paradowski scored on an RBI-single to center by McGee-Ross, but the Hawks answered quickly, scoring five times in the home-half of the second to knot the score at 5-5. The big blow for Monmouth was off the bat of senior Tommi Stowers, who hit her first career grand slam in the frame to make the score 5-4.

The Griffs broke the 5-5 tie in the top of the third on an RBI-single by Paradowski, and the Blue and Gold made it 7-5 in the fourth when Altman was able to score from second base after a Monmouth error. Monmouth made it a 7-6 game in the fourth with an RBI-hit by Coreth, and the score remained 7-6 in favor of Canisius until the bottom of the seventh.

In that inning, Baron got the rally started with a leadoff single, and she later scored with two outs in the frame as Monmouth's Julia Thuer drew a bases-loaded walk to tie the game at 7-7. Moments later, Monmouth senior Katie Harrington was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing fellow senior Morgan Maziarz to score from third, sealing the 8-7 win for the home team.

The Griffs racked up nine hits in the game two loss, led by Paradowski, who had three base knocks to go with two runs scored, an RBI and two stolen bases. McGee-Ross and Costan also had multi-hit efforts in the losing cause for the Blue and Gold. Senior Emily Nicosia came on in relief of starter Alexis Churchill and took the loss in the circle after she allowed three runs on seven hits while walking four and striking out six in 5.1 innings of work. Irons came in in relief for the Hawks and picked up her third win of the weekend after she gave up two runs on three hits while fanning seven in five innings of action.
