Canisius Splits Doubleheader on the Road at Quinnipiac

The Canisius volleyball team split its MAAC doubleheader with Quinnipiac Sunday at Burt Kahn Court.

The Griffs dropped the first two sets of the opening match but would win back-to-back sets by identical 25-23 scores to force a fifth set. Quinnipiac would win the decisive fifth set, 15-9, to claim the first match (19-25, 22-25, 25-23, 25-23, 9-15).

Canisius would maintain control of the second match with the Bobcats, sweeping the best-of-five series (25-18, 25-18, 25-20) to split the doubleheader.

Match One Recap
After dropping the first two sets, Canisius battled back in the first match of the afternoon to force a fifth set with Quinnipiac. The Bobcats controlled the first two sets Sunday afternoon, winning 25-19 and 25-22.

Quinnipiac would jump out to a 3-0 lead in the third set, but Canisius would immediately respond. A service ace courtesy of Hannah Nelson would tie the score up at 3-3. The two teams would trade points back and forth the entire frame, with Canisius trailing 21-19 late in the set. A 6-2 spurt by the Blue & Gold, which included two kills by Elle Shult, would help Canisius close out the set.

The fourth set provided much of the same back-and-forth style of play, including 18 ties and 10 lead changes. The largest lead for either team was just two points. Canisius trailed 23-21, but the Blue & Gold would rattle off back-to-back points to tie the set up at 23 apiece, forcing Quinnipiac timeout. Coming out of the break, sophomore Ella Loussia would aid the Golden Griffins to force a fifth set courtesy of back-to-back kills, lifting Canisius to a 25-23 advantage.

Canisius would jump out to a 2-0 lead in the final set courtesy of kills by Shult and Rachel Kinney. Quinnipiac would follow on a 7-1 run forcing a Canisius timeout. The Bobcats would keep their momentum in the match's final set, forcing another Golden Griffins timeout behind 13-7. Quinnipiac would close out the first match of the day with two-straight kills courtesy of Morgan Sherwin to take the fifth set.

Canisius was led by Loussia and Shult, who recorded career highs in kills with 21 and 13, respectively, to pace a Canisius attack that hit .128 (58-34-188) in the match. Nelson and Camila Vazquez would also chip in with eight kills each.

Nelson and sophomore Bree Long both had 20 digs in the opening match. Kinney would chip in with 15 digs, as Loussia also posted double-digit digs with 10. Ashley Kekeisen and Callie Chamulak each recorded 22 assists for the Griffs.

Quinnipiac was led by Maggie Baker's match-high 25 kills to go along with 10 digs, as the Bobcats hit .198 (63-26-187) in the first matchup. Aryanah Diaz helped the Bobcats' effort with 16 kills and 25 digs, as Sherwin also posted a double-double with 17 kills and 14 digs. Nicole Migliozzi led both teams in the match with 50 assists.

Match Two Recap
Canisius would start the nightcap racing out to an early 12-4 advantage on the Bobcats. Quinnipiac would respond with a small run of their own, bringing the Golden Griffins lead to 16-13, their smallest of the first set. The Blue & Gold closed out the set, 25-18, aided by two kills courtesy of junior Giulia La Longa in the final five points.

Quinnipiac started the second set with a 2-1 advantage over Canisius, their only lead of the entire match. A 9-0 scoring run, which included four kills by Loussia and another by Kinney, helped cushion the existing lead to 21-9. The Bobcats would finish the set winning eight of the last 12 points, but it wasn't enough as the Griffs prevailed in the second set, 25-18.

Again, Canisius began the following set with an early 7-4 advantage, behind three Loussia kills and a kill each for Nelson, Shult and Vazquez. Like most of the first match, the two teams traded points before Quinnipiac called a timeout trailing 12-9. Following the break, the programs continued their back-and-forth play until three straight points by the Bobcats forced a Canisius timeout, who still led 19-17.

Following the timeout, Canisius would finish the match on a 6-3 spurt, which included two kills by Kinney, to close the set with a 25-20 victory.

In the second match, Canisius (3-1, 3-1 MAAC) was led by Loussia with 13 kills. Nelson added eight kills and 13 digs, as Vazquez and Kinney would chip in with eight and seven kills, respectively. The Griffs attack hit at a .292 clip (42-11-106) in the victory.

Shult would lead Canisius with eight total blocks in the nightcap, while Ashley Kekeisen would hand out 20 assists.

Quinnipiac (2-2, 2-2 MAAC) was led in the second matchup by Baker's 17 kills, as the Bobcats attack was limited to hit .102 (35-23-118). Chloe Ka'Ahanui would have the match-high 29 assists and Diaz led both teams with 16 digs.

Head Coach Shannon Thompson's Comments
"I thought we played hard in both matches. We started out slow in the first game, but picked it up in the 3rd and 4th set. We are passing the ball really well which allows us to execute our offense. Overall, today was a good day and I am very proud of the way they came back in the 1st and how they started and finished game 2."

"After falling behind early, the message to the girls was to play our game. We were focused too much on what they were doing and I told them to focus on us and control our side. After dropping the first match there was a bitter taste in our mouths. The focus going into the second match was for us to start strong, stay strong, and finish strong."

"It was very important for us to come out fast in the second match. That was the game plan from the beginning. We wanted to come out and play our fast style and try to put the pressure on the other team."

"We are already preparing for next weekend. We need to be strategic in practice, lift, and recovery to make sure our bodies are ready for four matches next week against Rider and Iona."

Game Notes
• The Griffs now lead the series against Quinnipiac by a 15-6 margin. The second match was Canisius' first victory in Hamden since 2018, when they also swept the Bobcats in three sets.
• Callie Chamulak's 22-assist performance in the first match today was her third straight game with 20-plus assists.
• With her 20-dig showing in the first match, Bree Long now has 20-plus digs in 14 career matches.
• Today's first match was Ella Loussia's 10th career match with double-digit kills.
• Elle Shult had a career-high eight total blocks in the nightcap. Her previous best was seven against Tennessee Tech, when she was a member of Western Illinois.
