Game Recap: Ice Hockey |

Hockey Falls in Overtime at Air Force

Willie Reim scored his second goal of the game at the 3:43 mark of overtime to lift Air Force to a 4-3 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey Association action Friday at the United States Air Force Academy's Cadet Ice Arena.

Reim also accounted for the first Falcons (2-9-1, 2-9-1 AHA) goal of the contest while Brandon Koch and Ty Pochipiniski recorded the other two Air Force tallies.

Sophomore Keaton Mastrodonato registered a goal and an assist while freshmen Jackson Decker and Jack Lyons both scored their first collegiate goals for the Golden Griffins (7-3-0, 7-3-0 AHA), who saw their four-game winning streak come to an end with Friday's setback.

Reim's game-winning goal came after Mastrodonato was able to get the Griffs to overtime by scoring an extra-attacker goal with just 98 seconds remaining in regulation, tying the game when he redirected senior Logan Gestro's pass over the glove of Schilling from the middle of the slot to tie the game at 3-3.

In the extra session, the Falcons maintained possession for a majority of the 3-on-3 overtime before Reim ended the game when his centering feed deflected off the stick of a Canisius defender and into the cage.

Earlier in the contest, Decker staked Canisius to a 1-0 lead in the final minute of the opening frame as he cross-ice pass was deflected into the Air Force goal by a Falcons defenseman.

Air Force responded to Decker's tally with a pair of goals during the final six minutes the second period to take a 2-1 lead.

Reim tied the game at the 14:10 mark of the middle frame, using a Luke Robinson stretch pass to get behind the Canisius defense before placing the puck past sophomore netminder Jacob Barczewski with a backhanded effort.

Koch gave the Falcons the lead with 2:10 to play in the second with a power-play tally as his wrist shot from the top of the point found its way through traffic and over the right shoulder of Bacrzewski to make it a 2-1 contest.

Lyons brought the Griffs level a little more than two minutes into the third as he beat Air Force netminder Alex Schilling with a wrist shot during a 2-on-2 rush to tie the game at 2-all.

Pochipiniski restored the Falcons advantage at the 12:12 mark of the third, deflecting a point shot from Koch past Barczewski to put Air Force in front, 3-2.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"We got out-competed by an opponent tonight. That's very disappointing. We are not an excuse-driven culture. There may be lots of excuses about why we didn't have energy and why we did not out-compete Air Force tonight. But we don't live in that world, so we're very disappointed. With multiple guys, and almost throughout our entire roster, there was not enough effort and it's really disappointing. We're leaving with one point and that's not what we came here to do. We did get a goal with an extra attacker out, but tonight we got more than we deserved. We didn't deserve anything tonight. So, we lick our wounds, we try to recover as much as we can and we know we need to be much better tomorrow. We know that it's a big game to get our momentum going back in the right direction.

"They were harder than us in the second, especially around our net. It looked like a lot of times our guys assumed good things were going to happen without making sure that they happened. That goes to potentially not giving the opponent enough respect. We've been talking about that through a lot of our games that we can't assume that the puck is going to get by them and we're going on offense. We didn't necessarily cheat the game because Air Force didn't give us a chance. They just say absolutely peppered Barzo. Jacob Barczewski was unbelievable today. He is the main reason for leaving with any points in this game tonight. He was spectacular and we left him out to dry, to be honest. It was multiple Grade A after multiple Grade A chances and we were trying to get some momentum back, we had some new shifts. But overall, the second period was extremely poor for our group. We started to play better in that third period. It looked like maybe we got a little bit tired, but those are absolutely things that are going to happen in every hockey game you play. Tonight, we got out-competed and that is not okay in our culture. So, we're going to quickly fix that and prepare for tomorrow."
