Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Youngstown State Downs Men’s Basketball

Youngstown State guard Dwayne Cohill recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds to help lead the host Penguins to a 71-43 win over Canisius in non-league men's basketball action Saturday afternoon at the Beeghly Center in Youngstown, Ohio.

The win, Youngstown State's fourth-straight, improves the Penguins to 6-3 on the year, while the Golden Griffins fell to 2-9 with their fifth-straight defeat.

GAME RECAP
Youngstown State used a pair of first-half runs to create separation and essentially put the game out of reach for the Griffs. A 17-4 run Youngstown State over the span of 4:10 put the host Penguins up 23-8 with 9:36 left before halftime. In that run, Cohill accounted for six of the Penguins' points. Moments later, Canisius senior guard Ahamadou Fofana hit a 3-pointer from the top of the key to cut the Youngstown State lead to 10 at 23-13, but the Penguins quickly answered with 10-1 run over the next 5:12 to make the score 33-14 in favor of the home team.

Youngstown State took a 35-17 lead into the locker room at halftime after the Penguins shot 40.6 percent from the field in the first 20 minutes of play, while the Griffs shot just 15.6 percent (5-for-32) from the floor in the opening stanza. In the second half, Youngstown State's cushion never dipped 13 points, as the Penguins shot 65.2 percent (15-for-23) from the floor for the frame. Cohill recorded 12 second-half points on 5-of-6 shooting from the field.

Canisius senior Malek Green led all scorers with a game-high 19 points, and he also grabbed nine rebounds. Fellow senior Jordan Henderson added six points, while Fofana chipped in five points and a career-high eight assists.

Head Coach Reggie Witherspoon's Postgame Comments
"This was a day when not much went right, obviously. We couldn't make shots, and we didn't get any stops. Add those two things together and that's how you end up where we were today."

"We started off getting stops, but some of the shots we took early didn't look like they were even close to going in the basket. In the second half, we did some things differently personnel-wise, and we tried to apply some full-court pressure, but when you're not able to stay in front of the basketball, and you are missing shots like we did, it just adds up on you quickly."

"To get out from underneath something like this, we need to get in the gym and just keep working. I'm not telling them that we've lost five in a row. We aren't going to get out of this on pregame speeches, or postgame speeches. We need to get in the gym and get to work."

GAME NOTES
• This was the seventh all-time meeting between these two schools, and Canisius leads the series 6-1.
• Green has now scored 14-or more points in eight of the 10 games he has played in this season.
• Fofana's eight assists are the most for a Griff in a game since Malik Johnson had 11 assists against Quinnipiac Jan. 31, 2020.
• Canisius was without junior Jacco Fritz on Saturday, who missed the game with an ankle injury.
