Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women’s Basketball Falls at Duquesne

Canisius had four players score in double figures, but its fourth-quarter comeback attempt fell short against Duquesne at the UPMC Cooper Fieldhouse in Pittsburgh on Wednesday afternoon, 69-60.

Freshman guard Lydia Gattozzi tallied a season-high 15 points while adding four rebounds and a pair of blocks. Senior guard Erika Joseph added 12 points and tied her career high with seven rebounds. Sophomore guard Dani Haskell (12 points) and junior guard Shaunae Brown (11 points) joined Gattozzi and Joseph in double figures for the Griffs (2-5).

Precious Johnson and Fatou Pouye paced Duquesne's offense with 19 points apiece. Megan McConnell added nine points and 10 assists while committing two turnovers for the Dukes (4-4).

GAME RECAP
Duquesne opened the game on a 7-2 run before Canisius chipped away at the Dukes' lead, eventually tying the contest, 10-10, with 3:55 left in the opening quarter. The Dukes finished the stanza on an 11-2 run, building a 21-12 advantage after the opening 10 minutes of play.

Canisius forced Duquesne to miss five of its first six shots in the second quarter, but the Dukes responded by converting its next five shots, part of a 6-of-8 stretch from the field, to take a 39-23 advantage into the halftime break.

The Griffs' defense again stood firm against Duquesne to open the second half, forcing the Dukes to miss seven of their first eight shot attempts. Canisius took advantage of Duquesne's scoring slump, going on a 7-0 run to cut the deficit to 43-33 halfway through the quarter. Twelve of Duquesne's 18 third-quarter points came following the Griffs' run.

After Duquesne took a 19-point lead with 21 seconds left in the third, Canisius responded by netting four 3-pointers in nearly four minutes, cutting the deficit back to 10, 60-50.

The Dukes tried to once again distance themselves from Canisius as they scored eight of the following 10 points to extend their lead back to 16 with 2:13 remaining.

Canisius closed out the contest on a 10-3 run, trimming Duquesne's lead to just eight at one point, but the Dukes added a free throw with three seconds to secure the nine-point victory.

Head Coach Sahar Nusseibeh's Postgame Comments
"I am really proud of how our team responded in the second half. To outscore a team like Duquesne 37-30 in the last 20 minutes is huge for us in terms of measuring our progress offensively. They showed a lot of fight and played team basketball where we moved the ball and committed to tempo.

"When you go up against girls 6-foot-4 and 6-foot-3 for 40 minutes with our height, you are going to wear down. Duquesne did a great job taking advantage of their size. While our adjustments in-game were effective, it was a short-term fix. Credit them for executing their game plan well.

"I am proud of [Lydia Gattozzi's] performance tonight. She only knows how to go hard and we are so glad that she finally had some offensive success today. It is always fun to see workers like her make an impact. Tonight was a breakout game for her and we are excited to see her continue to grow this season."

Game Notes
• Wednesday was the seventh all-time meeting between Canisius and Duquesne in women's basketball. The Dukes took the lead in the series, 4-3, and are now 3-0 all-time against the Griffs at home.
