Cornell Downs Men’s Basketball, 89-75

The visiting Cornell Big Red shot 61.8 percent from the field and knocked down 11 3-point field goals en route to an 89-75 win over Canisius in non-conference men's basketball action Monday night at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Cornell improved to 6-1 with the victory, while the Golden Griffins saw their two-game win streak come to an end. Canisius is now 2-5 on the year.

GAME RECAP
Cornell jumped out to an early 16-6 lead 6:30 into the contest and never looked back. Midway through the first half, graduate student Scott Hitchon hit a pair of free-throws to cut Cornell's lead to 21-19, but that was as close as the Griffs would get for the remainder of the night, as the Big Red used a fast-paced 7-0 run over the next 1:58 to make the score 28-19 in favor of the visiting team. Cornell took a 46-30 lead into the locker room at halftime after the Big Red closed out the opening stanza by shooting 57.1 percent from the field and 45.4 percent (5-for-11) from 3-point land.

Cornell's offense continued to roll in the second half, as the Big Red scored the first eight points out of intermission to make the score 54-30 with 18:21 remaining. Cornell's lead ballooned to as many as 27 points moments later, but Canisius kept battling, using a 15-7 run midway through the second half to make the score 83-71 with 5:16 left to play. However, Cornell ended any hopes of a Griff comeback after junior guard Greg Dolan scored on back-to-back possessions to put the visitors up 16 at 87-71 with less than 5:00 left on the game clock.

Five Cornell players scored in double-figures in the win, led by Kobe Dickson, who posted 17 points to go with five rebounds and four assists. Jordan Jones added 14 points, and Dolan finished the night with 12 points, a career-high eight assists and six rebounds. As a team, Cornell was credited with 23 assists in the win, and the Big Red out-rebounded the Griffs by a 37-31 count.

For Canisius, senior Malek Green led all scorers with his 19 points, and he also grabbed seven boards. Hitchon ended the night with 16 points, five rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot and senior Jordan Henderson chipped in 10 points and two assists. Canisius shot 37.1 percent from the field and just 20.7 percent from 3-point land, connecting on 6-of-29 tries from long-range.

Head Coach Reggie Witherspoon's Postgame Comments
"Give credit to Cornell. They out-played us in every aspect tonight. They played with extraordinary intensity, and we knew that coming in. We were not surprised by that. They have a really good team and all the credit goes to them."

"They play extremely fast. We knew that coming in, and it is extremely difficult to prepare for. We tried a number of things to slow them down. We played zone, we went with four guards, but they did a great job and they shot 50 percent from three. They made it very difficult for us tonight for sure."
