Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Scores First Win of 2021-22 Season

Six Canisius players scored in double-figures, led by senior Malek Green, who scored a game-high 18 points, and the Golden Griffins tied a program at the Koessler Athletic Center with 16 made 3-pointers as the Blue and Gold cruised past Fredonia 106-40 Monday night in non-conference action.

The win was the first of the year for Canisius and improves the Griffs to 1-4. Fredonia is now 0-4 with the loss.

The 66-point victory for Canisius sets a new program record for largest margin of victory in a game. The previous record was 62 points, set Dec. 21, 1949 when the Griffs defeated Tiffin 93-31.

GAME RECAP
Canisius jumped out to a 12-0 lead just 3:28 into the contest and never looked back. Jordan Henderson striped a pair of 3-pointers in the early run and junior Armon Harried scored four points as Canisius scored on five of its first eight possession in the game. Five-straight points from graduate student Scott Hitchon pushed the Griffs' margin to 24 points with 5:55 left in the opening half, and Canisius took a 30-point lead moments later on a hook-shot in the lane by Hitchon. The Griffs went into the locker room up 53-20 after the Blue and Gold shot 51.3 percent from the field and 39.1 percent (9-for-23) from 3-point range in the opening 20 minutes of play.

In the second half, Canisius' offense continued to roll, and a 3-point field goal by Henderson with 16:30 left on the clock, put the home team up 41 at 63-22. A 3-pointer by senior guard Ahamadou Fofana with 1:33 left in the game capped the scoring for the night, and also tied the program's record for made 3-pointer in a game played in the Koessler Athletic Center. Canisius also had 16 made 3-pointers against Siena back on Jan. 10, 2001.

Green's 18 points came after he went 7-for-8 from the field, 1-for-1 from 3-point land and 3-for-5 from the free-throw line in 15:04 of action. Freshman Xzavier Long scored 17 points, highlighted by a 14-point second half, and he also grabbed five rebounds in the victory. Junior Akrum Ahemed scored 16 points, while Fofana and Henderson each chipped in 13 in the victory. Harried had 11 points, five assists, four rebounds and three steals in the win for Canisius, which ended the night with 35 points off 29 Fredonia turnovers while shooting 51.7 percent from the field.

Head Coach Reggie Witherspoon's Postgame Comments
"Overall, I thought we played hard and showed some good effort at both ends of the floor. These games are hard to get ready for, but I thought I guys did a good job in preparing for a well-coached Fredonia team."

"Our early season travel schedule has been difficult because we've played a lot of games in a short time frame in four different states. This was the only day we could play this game, so we worked it out, but now we come back and have another game here in less than 48 hours. We talked about taking them seriously from the start, and I thought our guys did a good job taking control. We were able to use a lot of different guys and different combinations, which we can look at on film and use to keep getting us better."
