Volleyball Closes Regular Season with Sunday Setback at Saint Peter’s

Despite a career-high 18 kills from senior Rachel Kinney, the Canisius volleyball team suffered a 3-1 (25-19, 24-26, 25-18, 25-11) setback at Saint Peter's in Metro Atlantic Athletic Association volleyball action Sunday at the Yanitelli Center in Jersey City, N.J.

Alanis Alvarado tallied 15 kills and Angeleyshka Curbelo pitched in 13 to pace a Peacocks (3-27, 2-16 MAAC) attack that combined to post a .225 (45-13-142) hitting percentage for the match. Alvarado also chipped in a team-best 21 digs to record a double-double while Alwen Pila finished with 20. Wildalys Soto also turned in a double-double performance for the hosts, dishing out a team-best 32 assists while adding 13 digs.

Kinney was the lone Golden Griffin (10-17, 10-8 MAAC) to reach double figures in kills as Canisius was limited to a .130 (46-25-162) attack clip for the contest. Junior libero Bree Long notched 17 digs while Kinney posted 14 to record the double-double. Freshman Avery Dole finished with a season-high 33 assists.

After dropping the opening set, 25-19, Canisius evened the match with a 26-24 victory in the second set as it used kills from freshman Kara Zaucha and Kinney on consecutive plays to break at 24-all deadlock and secure the win.

Saint Peter's never trailed in the third set, scoring the first two points of the frame before using a 10-4 stretch midway through the frame to pull away from the Griffs as it cruised to a 25-18 victory and a 2-1 lead.

The Peacocks carried their momentum into the fourth set, rattling off the first five points of the frame as it ran away from Canisius on its way to a 25-11 victory and the match.
