Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

East Carolina Powers Past Men’s Basketball

East Carolina used a 22-6 run over the final 9:05 of the first half and never looked back, as the host Pirates scored an 83-71 victory over the Canisius Golden Griffins Friday night in non-conference men's basketball action at Minges Coliseum in Greenville, N.C.

The win moves ECU to 2-0 on the year, while Canisius fell to 0-2 with the loss.

For Canisius, junior Armon Harried led all scorers with a career-high 22 points, while sophomore guard Siem Uijtendaal chipped in a career-high 15 points, with 13 of those coming in the second half. East Carolina had five players in double-figures, with Tristen Newton and Brandon Suggs each scoring 14 points apiece in the victory.

GAME RECAP
A pair of Malek Green free-throws with 9:33 left in the first half made the score 25-20 in favor of the Pirates. From there, ECU scored the game's next seven points to push its lead to a dozen, with Newton accounting for of those four points. The Pirates continued to build on their lead, while taking advantage of Canisius' inability to score, as the Blue and Gold made just two field goals in the final 6:40 of the opening stanza. East Carolina went into the locker room up 47-26 after it shot 50.0 percent from the field in the game's first 20 minutes, while the Griffs shot just 18.2 percent from the floor in the first half.

In the second half, East Carolina's lead ballooned to as many as 29 points at 74-45 with 8:43 left in the contest. The Griffs battled back on an 18-2 run over the next 4:46, with Uijtendaal accounting for 13 of those points on the power of four made 3-pointers and a free-throw, to make the score 76-63 with 4:35 left to play. ECU pushed its cushion back to 18 points moments later, but five-straight points from graduate student Scott Hitchon set the final score at 83-71.

Harried's 22 points came after he went 8-for-17 from the field, with four makes coming from 3-point land, and he also dished out four assists to go with two rebounds and two steals. All four of Uijtendaal's field goals came from 3-point range, and he also grabbed five boards and a career-high four steals. Junior Jacco Fritz chipped in 10 points and a team-high five assists in the loss, as Canisius ended the night shooting 32.3 percent from the field, 34.3 percent (12-for-35) from 3-point range and 73.1 percent from the free-throw line. Senior George Maslennikov grabbed a career-high seven boards in the loss, with three of those rebounds coming off the offensive glass.

Head Coach Reggie Witherspoon's Postgame Comments
"Our first 20 minutes were really bad tonight. But these are the types of situations we need to learn from. We have to be locked in and ready to go right away. Our intensity level needs to take a step up, or we're always going to be a step behind. And tonight, we were a step behind in the first half."

"Hopefully, we're starting to learn that we can't be on our heels defensively. Because when you are on your heels defensively, it effects the way you play offensively as well. In the second half, I thought we did a better job of playing hard at both ends of the floor and really pushing forward, but we still have a way to go there and it needs to be a 40-minute effort."

"East Carolina is a really good team. They are extremely physical, and they are very explosive offensively. This was a good learning lesson for us as we move forward."
