Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Men's Soccer Drops Heartbreaker to Quinnipiac

Brage Aasen was the goal scorer on both of Quinnipiac's tallies, including the game-winning marker in the 99th minute, lifting the Bobcats (7-5-0, 2-2-0 MAAC) to a 2-1 overtime victory over Canisius (1-7-2, 1-2-0 MAAC) in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action from the Demske Sports Complex on Saturday afternoon.

In what proved to be a physical, offensive battle, both teams were held scoreless in the opening 45 minutes. Quinnipiac outshot the Griffs in the opening half, 9-6, and also had the advantage in shots on target, 6-2.

Junior Inder Thind and freshman Kodie Sarkodie recorded the shots on goal for Canisius in the opening half, while graduate student William Howard stopped all six shots he faced.

Aasen netted the first of his two goals on a set-piece, following a Reilly Boyer yellow card in the 51st minute, as his free kick strike darted past Howard from 25 yards out.

In the 74th minute, Thind was brought down inside the penalty area by Jared Smith and the Griffs were awarded a penalty kick.

Alessio Atzori was selected to take the attempt for Canisius, depositing his right-footed strike into the bottom right corner of the goal, catching Quinnipiac's goalkeeper, Andreas Hadjigavriel, leaning to the left side of the net.

Dylan Rice nearly scored the go-ahead goal for Canisius in the 83rd minute as his shot just missed the top-right corner of the goal.

Luke Szablewski headed a cross off a corner kick in the 98th minute but sailed wide left of the goal in an attempt to net the golden goal.

Just a minute later, David Bercedo lofted a cross inside the 18-yard box to Aasen, who utilized a friendly bounce off the right post to pot the game-winning marker.

Howard made a career-high 11 saves in goal for Canisius, as the Bobcats outshot the Griffs, 22-14, which included a 13-4 advantage in shots on goal.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane's Postgame Comments

"We have been in a lot of very close games this year and we need to start converting them into wins. I thought we played well today and if we showed a little more composure in front of the goal we would have come away with a win."

GAME NOTES
• Quinnipiac extended its winning streak against Canisius to seven games with the victory. In 13 all-time meetings against Canisius, the Bobcats are 11-1-1.
• Saturday marked the fourth time Canisius had played in overtime this season, which is the most since 2017 when the program played in seven contests with extra time.
• With his penalty kick goal, Atzori extended his career-high for goals (3). All three of his goals this season have come off penalties, which is the most by a Canisius player in a single season since Will Hudson had four in 2013.
