Women’s Soccer Defeated by Siena

Siena netted three first-half goals to pace its way to a 3-1 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer action Wednesday afternoon from the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

The Saints improved to 3-1-0 in MAAC play (5-6-1 overall), while the Golden Griffins fell to 0-5-0 (0-9-2 overall) on the year.

Katrina Kurtz opened the scoring for Siena in the 16th minute, launching one past Canisius goalkeeper Jessica Jones for the early lead.

Emily McNelis added to the Saints advantage in the 22nd minute of the contest, putting the visitors up a pair.

Four minutes later, Canisius cut into the lead after an awarded corner kick. Freshman Erin Weir placed the ball into the box to a waiting Shauna Lee. The graduate student then passed it off to Luca Fahmer, who fired it into the right side of the net for her first goal of the season.

With five minute remaining in the first half of the match, Siena regained its two-goal advantage. Carrie Krohn received the pass from McNelis before striking it past Jones.

Outshooting the visitors, 11-3, in the final 45 minutes of action, Canisius had multiple scoring opportunities, but were unable to capitalize.

Sophomore Tiani Fonoti had six shot attempts, including five in the second half. Fonoti nearly found the back of the net in the 78th minute after putting a close-range shot on Siena goalkeeper Leslie Adams, but Adams' tipped it above the goal.

Head Coach Ryan Louis' Postgame Comments
"While we are disappointed to have lost, we are happy to see the consistent progress, especially the fight and persistence in the second half. We did a great job creating scoring chances and were only a couple of bounces away from getting a result."
