Women’s Soccer Defeated by Niagara

Niagara scored three second-half goals to earn a3-2 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's soccer action Wednesday evening at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Sophomore
Tiani Fonoti gave the Griffs the lead in the first half with a pair of tallies.

Fonoti opened the scoring in the 27th minute with a strike just outside the penalty arc, putting the ball into the left side of the net past the diving Niagara goalkeeper, Felicia Grufman.


The Layton, Utah, native added to her goal total three minutes later, putting the Golden Griffins up 2-0.


After a Canisius throw-in, Fonoti received the ball from freshman
Erin Weir before driving past the Purple Eagles defenders and striking it into the right side of the net.

Djeynaba Thiam got Niagara on the board with a goal in the 59th minute before knotting the contest at two with another marker in the 64th minute.


Emma Bough gave the visiting Purple Eagles their first lead of the game at the 77:20 mark, sealing the victory for Niagara.


Sophomore goalkeeper
Jessica Jones made nine saves in the loss for the Griffs.
 
Game Notes
• Fonoti now has four goals on the season, setting a career high for the sophomore
• Fonoti's pair of goals tied her career high, which she initially established back on April 6 at Niagara.
• Jones' nine saves tied her career-high in stops; she previously made nine saves on April 6, which was also against Niagara.
• With the assist on Fonoti's second goal, Weir now has three assists on the season.

Canisius wraps up the season with a matchup Saturday against Saint Peter's. Kickoff between the Griffs and Peacocks is scheduled for noon from Jaroschak Field in Jersey City, N.J.
