Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Pair of Second Half Tallies Lift Men’s Soccer Over Iona

Second half goals from Lachlan Beever and Dylan Rice, along with a nine-save clean sheet by William Howard, aided Canisius (1-6-2, 1-1-0 MAAC) to a 2-0 victory over Iona (3-4-2, 0-1-1 MAAC) in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's soccer action Saturday from Mazzella Field in New Rochelle, N.Y.

After both teams were held scoreless in the first half, Beever opened the scoring in the 58th minute with a left-footed strike which split a pair of Iona defenders before grazing off the left post and into the net.

Just three minutes after scoring the opening goal, Beever nearly netted his second tally of the game after a Canisius free kick. Jonny Tekie took the set piece for the Griffs, which was lasered off the crossbar and bounced back into the middle of the penalty area. Beever then headed the rebound toward the net but his attempt sailed just above the crossbar.

Iona had four of its five shots on goal in the second half after Beever's near-goal, but Howard and the Griffs' defense prevented the Gaels from netting the equalizer.

Rice potted the Griffs' insurance marker in the 89th minute off a feed from Matt Spangler, who chipped the ball from deep in the middle third to Rice as he entered the attacking third. Rice's shot rolled just out of the reach of Iona's goalkeeper, Zach Nelson, who dove to his right to prevent the score.

Iona outshot Canisius for the game, 18-13, and held the advantage in shots on target, 9-6.

Beever recorded two shots on goal, while Rice, Tekie, Alessandro Fabiano and Noah Hodson each recorded a shot on target in the victory. Howard earned his first collegiate clean sheet, stopping all nine of Iona's shots on goal.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane's Postgame Comments
"Today was a very good win on the road against a quality Iona team. We've been knocking on the door all season and our hard work and perseverance finally paid off today with a win."

GAME NOTES
• Saturday marked the 34th meeting between Canisius and Iona. The Gaels still hold the advantage in the all-time series, 21-9-4. Canisius won in New Rochelle for the first time since 2014 when the Griffs also defeated the Gaels by a 2-0 score.
• Canisius won its first game after going into halftime tied since Oct. 25, 2017, when the Griffs beat Marist, 4-2.
• The Griffs improved to 47-11-3 when scoring at least two goals under Dermot McGrane's tutelage. Since 2015, Canisius now has a 27-8-3 record when tallying at least two goals (.750).
• Beever has scored in back-to-back contests for the first time with Canisius. It is also the fourth goal-scoring streak of his collegiate career, with the previous three instances — all of which were three-game goal streaks — coming during his freshman year at nearby Medaille in 2018.
• Spangler has recorded assists in back-to-back contests, giving him his first collegiate point streak.
• Howard's nine-save performance marked the fourth time that the graduate transfer has made at least five saves this season.
