Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

UAlbany Takes Down Women's Lacrosse, 19-8

Game Recap
UAlbany (2-2) tallied 11 first-half goals on 24 shots en route to their 19-8 victory over the Golden Griffins Saturday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse action at Bob Ford Field in Albany, NY.

The Great Danes were led by Ally Alliegro and Kyla Zapolski, who tallied three goals apiece. Alliegro also had two assists in the contest. UAlbany saw 13 different players find the back of the net Saturday afternoon with Sam Tortora and Sarah Falk being the others to record a multi-goal game.

Canisius (0-5) was led by senior Bryar Cummings, sophomore Katie Smolensky and freshman Paige Stachura. The trio scored two goals each for the Blue and Gold with Cummings picking up an assist as well. Juniors Marissa Malvaso and Miranda Malvaso were the other goal scorers for the Griffs, both of whom have now scored at least once in all five games this season.

Junior netminders Lauren Gilbert and Emily Van Kessel combined to face 39 shots from the Great Danes in the loss. Van Kessel replaced Gilbert during the final ten minutes of play, stopping a pair of shots.

The game began with five unanswered goals from the Great Danes before Smolensky put a brief halt to the run when she found the back of the net on a free-position attempt at the 14:12 mark. However, Albany scored three-straight over the next 1:32 to take a commanding 8-1 lead with 8:20 remaining in the half.

Cummings scored her first goal of the day at the 17 seconds later, which was followed by two Great Dane goals before Marissa Malvaso got one past the Albany keeper for the Griffs third goal of the contest. The Great Danes added one more before the half came to an end, making the score 11-3.

Canisius scored two goals to start the second half that made it an 11-5 game, however, the Danes went on to score seven-straight goals over the next 13:54 to make it an insurmountable 18-5 advantage.

The Griffs scored three of the game's final four tallies to determine the final margin.

Head Coach Allison Daley's Postgame Comments
"With the mistakes we made in the first half, it allowed Albany to get a significant lead, making it difficult for us to battle back. We did limit our turnovers in the second half, but we need to learn to come out, compete, and take care of the ball from the opening draw."

"The potential is there for this team, we need to continue to believe in what we are doing, and take pride in the little things. The focus will be on Canisius over these days few days of practice before our home opener on Wednesday."

Game Notes
• Saturday afternoon was the third matchup between Canisius and UAlbany. The Great Danes have taken all three meetings.
