Women’s Lacrosse Beats St. Bonaventure to Open Homestand

Sophomore Katie Smolensky recorded a career-high seven points to lead Canisius to a 17-7 victory over long-time rival St. Bonaventure Wednesday at the Demske Sports Complex in downtown Buffalo.

Smolensky dished out a game-high five assists and added two goals to pace a potent Golden Griffins (1-5) attack that established a season high for goals with the victory. Junior Marissa Malvaso and sophomore Skylar McArthur posted hat tricks while senior Bryar Cummings finished with four points on two goals and two assists.

Erika Sherwood tallied two goals for the Bonnies (5-2) who were held to a season low for goals in the setback.

Canisius never trailed in the contest as Marissa Malvaso notched the first two goals of the game before McArthur and freshmen Paige Stachura and Anna Ziemba added individual markers to give the Griffs an early 5-0 advantage.

St. Bonaventure temporarily halted Canisius' momentum, scoring two of the next three goals to trim the deficit to 6-2 with just over 10 minutes to play in the opening half.

The Griffs' took control of the game from there, however, rattling off eight unanswered goals over the next 21-plus minutes to build a commanding 14-2 advantage with just under 19 minutes remaining in regulation. Six different players found the back of the net for Canisius during the game-changing spurt, with Cummings and McArthur tallying two goals each.

St. Bonaventure attempted to get back into the contest, recording three of the next four goals to pull within 10, but the teams traded tallies the rest of the way to determine the final margin.

Junior Lauren Gilbert got the start in goal for Canisius and made eight saves before being replaced in the second half by junior Emily Van Kessel, who finished with three stops.

Ashley Herrick took the loss between the pipes for the Bonnies, allowing 14 goals and making 11 saves before replaced in the second half by Savannah Clarke.

Head Coach Allison Daley's Postgame Comments
"Today we showed some really good moments, some really good positives, with the team that we do have inside of our locker room. That's something we've been searching for over the last five games and it really showed today. It's a nice way to open up at home; getting a lot of different scorers as we executed our game plan defensively and through transition. Today's intensity in which we played with shows why we play the tough schedule that we have. We were able to really push the tempo and increase the intensity out there. If we continue to play at this rate and at this level, we will be able to really push our way through conference play, which is why we prepared our non-conference schedule the way we did.
"Goaltending is definitely a positive that we have in our program. Both Lauren and Emily are really pushing each other each day and it starts with practice. Our defense put their shooters in a position for our goalies to see the ball well. And when they did get shots through, they answered, seeing the ball and stepping up and making some great saves and really being the backbone of our defense today and helping us start from in the crease all the way forward."
