Softball Battles Back to Beat Buffalo

RECAP
Canisius senior Lauren Castro fueled a three-run rally in the fifth inning with a two-run homer, and junior Kara Paradowski helped preserve the win in the bottom of the seventh by throwing out the potential game-tying run as the Golden Griffins scored a 4-3 win over cross-town rival Buffalo Saturday afternoon on the second day of the Mason Invitational in Fairfax, Va.

Canisius improved to 7-9 on the season with the victory, while the Bulls slipped to 2-10 with the loss.

Trailing 2-1 in the top-half of the fifth, Canisius scored three times to take the 4-2 lead over UB. After junior Erin Hufford led off the frame with a base hit, the next two Canisius batters were retired. Castro came to the plate and promptly drilled the first pitch of her at-bat over the fence in left-center to make the score 3-2. The Griffs added an insurance run later in the frame on an RBI-single off the bat of junior Lindsi Dennis, which allowed pinch-runner Teagan Rice to score from second.

That insurance run proved to be big for Canisius, as Buffalo made it a one-run game in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI-double by Hannah Bardeen. With two outs in the frame, Bardeen was replaced by pinch-runner Mykaela Martin. Martin tried to score on a base-hit to center by Abagail Vincent, but Martin was thrown out at the plate by Paradowski, giving the Griffs their second-straight victory on the weekend.

Junior Emily Nicosia came on in relief and earned the win in the circle for the Blue and Gold after she allowed one run on four hits to go with two strikeouts in four innings of work. Hufford had three hits and scored two in the victory for Canisius, as the Griffs posted a total of nine hits in the winning effort. Senior Morgan Altman went 1-for-3 with a double in the victory, while sophomore Hannah Catallo-Stooks also had a hit and an RBI.
