Softball Ends Trip with Win Over Cornell

RECAP
Junior Erin Hufford went 3-for-4 with two RBI and freshman pitcher Sarah Cantley earned her third win of the season in relief as the Canisius softball team scored its third-straight victory with a 4-2 win over Cornell Sunday on the final day of the Mason Invite in Fairfax, Va. The win moves the Golden Griffins to 8-9 on the year, while the Big Red slipped to 4-5 with the loss.

Canisius trailed 2-0 after the first inning, but a three-run rally in the fourth put the Blue and Gold ahead for good. Freshman Madison Ross cut the Big Red's lead to 2-1 with a pinch-hit RBI-single to center that allowed senior Sue Vi to score, and moments later, freshman pinch runner Sophia Recrosio crossed the dish to knot the score at 2-2 on an RBI-single off the bat of senior Ashley Barnett.

Hufford put the Blue and Gold ahead for good with a base it down the left-field line with one out in the fourth, a hit that allowed Ross to score from third. In the home-half of the sixth, Hufford drove in an insurance run for the Griffs with a base hit back up the middle that allowed junior Lindsi Dennis to score from third.

The two-run lead was more than enough support for Cantley, who earned the win in relief after she gave up one hit over four innings of work while fanning three and walking one. The Griffs tallied eight hits on the day, with senior Rittany Sockwell recording a double in the fourth and junior Kara Paradowski had a base hit and stole a base, her team-leading sixth steal of the year.
