Baseball Falls to Radford, 8-2, Despite DeStefano Homer

RECAP
The Canisius baseball team could not mount enough offense against Radford in an 8-2 loss Saturday afternoon at Carter Memorial Stadium in Radford, Va. The Golden Griffins managed four extra-base hits compared to one from the Highlanders, but the host used a pair of three-run innings to put away the Blue and Gold.

With the loss, the Griffs moved to 3-10-1 on the season, while Radford shifted to a 7-7 record in 2020.

Colby Higgerson put together his second-straight multi-hit game for Radford by registering three hits and three runs scored, while Canisius senior Jake Burlingame collected two extra-base hits and freshman Mike DeStefano launched his first collegiate home run as part of a two-hit contest.

After both teams were unable to mount any runs through the first three innings, Radford broke through with a three-spot in the fourth as a Canisius error scored one while a single from Tanner Barrs pushed across two more runs.

Canisius got on the board in the fifth, courtesy of DeStefano's solo homer to start off the frame. The Highlanders answered back by plating three more runs in the home half of the inning, as Straton Podaras and David Bryant both drove in runs off singles, while Colby Higgerson later scored on a passed ball.

Burlingame helped himself get in scoring position during the sixth, as the centerfielder tripled before redshirt-junior Vinny Chiarenza knocked him in on a ground-out.

Radford did not keep it at 6-2 very long, as Higgerson brought home the Highlanders' seventh run on a single in the bottom of the sixth to make it 7-2. Bryant added another run in the eighth by singling home Higgerson, capping off the 8-2 victory.

Brandon Donovan earned the win with his six innings of two-run ball, allowing eight Canisius hits while striking out six. Colin Reid picked up the save with three scoreless innings of relief, giving up two hits and fanning three Griffs.

Getting the loss was sophomore Andrew Fron, as the righty ended up being on the hook for six runs (two earned) across 4.1 frames, recording three strikeouts while issuing two walks. Freshman Tom Peltier followed with two runs over 3.2 innings, also punching out three Radford batters while allowing two walks.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Tomorrow we need to come out and execute with runners in scoring position and make plays defensively and maintain energy as a team from start to finish.

"It was great to see Mikey (DeStefano) have a strong day today. Mikey is a special player that doesn't think about too much and just plays. When you play with a clear mind, success finds you."

Game Notes
• The all-time series between the two teams moves to 5-0 in favor of Radford.
• The triple is Burlingame's first three-base hit since March 24, 2019, a day where the then-junior tripled in both halves of a doubleheader sweep over Siena.
• Peltier's 3.2 innings sets a career high for the lefty, with Saturday being his third-straight appearance of two-or-more innings.
• DeStefano's two-hit day matches his career best, set in his collegiate debut on Feb. 15 against UMass Lowell.
• Saturday was Burlingame's fourth multi-hit game of the season, and the second multi-hit game for fellow senior Stephen Bennett.
• This is also Burlingame's first game of the season with multiple extra-base hits.
