Softball Splits to Begin Mason Invite

The Canisius softball team earned a split Friday to begin the Mason Invitational in Fairfax, Va. The Golden Griffins were defeated by host George Mason by a score of 14-3 in five innings, but earned the victory in game two by downing Hofstra, 5-1.

After Friday's games, Canisius moved at 6-9 on the season, while George Mason shifted to a 4-11 record and Hofstra dropped to 2-12 in 2020.

GAME 1
The Griffs started the game hot, taking a 2-0 lead after senior Lauren Castro homered down the left field line with sophomore Hannah Catallo-Stooks on base.

The Patriots quickly took their own lead in the bottom of the first, as an RBI single off the bat of Amelia Ely was followed by a two-run single from Rachel Warrens. Ely knocked in two more runs with another single in the second inning to extend the lead.

The game remained within reach for the Griffs until the bottom of the third, when Geroge Mason managed to put six unanswered runs on the board. Canisius contributed to the Patriots' success by allowing five errors in the frame. The home team tacked on three insurance runs in the fourth off a Adriana Erickson walk and a double from Ely.

Canisius attempted a comeback in the top of the fifth, when senior Brittany Sockwell hit a solo shot over the right field fence. However, the Patriots shut down the next three Canisius batters and took the game, 14-3.

GAME 2
Canisius began the nightcap the same way they began game one, as a Castro home run to left field allowed Catallo-Stooks to cross the plate for an early 2-0 lead.

The game remained 2-0 in favor of the Griffs until Hofstra scratched across a run with a Jordan Pietrzykoski triple that cut the lead in half.

The bottom of the sixth proved to be a crucial inning for Canisius. Senior Shealyn Ollison singled into right field with two runners on, pushing freshman Sophia Recrosio across home plate.

Senior Sue Vi also played a major role in securing insurance runs for the Griffs with her two-run single that gave the Blue and Gold a final 5-1 score.

Sophomore Alexis Churchill went the distance for the Griffs, allowing only one run while striking out six batters and walking two.

Notes

• Castro's home run marks the first Canisius home run in the 2020 season.

• The loss to George Mason marks the first multi-home run game since 2019, when Castro had two solo homers to beat Quinnipiac on May 3.
• Friday's opener marks the first Griffs game where two home runs were hit by two separate players since April 23, 2019 against St. Bonaventure.

Up Next

• Canisius will return to action for the second day of the Mason Invitational with a game against Big Four rival Buffalo on Saturday. First pitch is scheduled for 12:15 p.m.
