Hot Bats Lead to Softball's Victory Over Youngstown State

Hot bats helped the Canisius softball team get off to its best five-game start since 2017 after the Golden Griffins defeated Youngstown State 15-10 on the final day of the Gardner-Webb University Tournament.

The win, which moves Canisius to 3-2 on the year, stands as the 100th career victory for head coach Kim Griffin. The Penguins fell to 3-2 with the loss.

Canisius got off to its hot start when junior Erin Hufford tripled to get the Griffs on base. Senior Ashley Barnett then reached on a fielders choice, setting up the situation for senior Lauren Castro to make the score 2-0 in favor of the Blue and Gold. Senior Morgan Altman then had the second triple of the first inning to make it 3-0 in favor of Canisius.

Youngstown State scored single runs in the second and third innings to make the score 3-2, but Canisius rallied with a six-run fourth, highlighted by an triple from Barnett that drove in three runs and a two-RBI base hit by senior Gianna Degaltini.

Canisius added three more runs to grow its lead in the top of the fifth, an inning that featured Hufford's second triple of the contest, which pushed a run across the dish.

Nine of Canisius' 12 batters had at least one hit on they and three different players recorded a triple in the winning effort. Freshman Sarah Cantley earned the win in the circle after she struck out seven in four innings of relief.
