Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Drops a Pair at San Jose State

The Canisius softball team opened its west coast road trip Tuesday by falling in a non-league doubleheader at San Jose State in San Jose, Calif. The host Spartans took the first game by a score of 8-0 in five innings before winning 3-2 in walk-off fashion in nine innings in the nightcap.

With the wins, San Jose State moves to 9-2 on the year, having won nine straight overall, while the Golden Griffins fell to 3-4 with the pair of defeats.

Game One
The host Spartans wasted little time getting on the scoreboard and never looked back in the first game of the twinbill, as San Jose State stretched its win streak to eight with the 8-0 victory in five innings. The Spartans scored three times in the home-half of the first and then took advantage of a Canisius fielding error and back-to-back extra-base hits to plate four runs in the bottom of the second.

Both of the Griffs' hits in the game one loss came in the top-half of the fourth, as junior Kara Paradowski led off the frame with a bunt-single, and redshirt-senior Lauren Castro reached base later in the inning with a base hit to past the third baseman.

Castro took the loss in the circle for the Blue and Gold after she allowed eight runs, four earned, on 10 hits to go with three strikeouts and two walks. San Jose State pitcher Shannon Haddad moved her record to 5-1 on the season after she allowed just two hits and fanned 10 of the 19 batters she faced.

Game Two
Junior Erin Hufford started game two out strong for the Griffs, doubling into right-center, which put Canisius into scoring position early. The Blue and Gold managed to strike first after Ashley Barnett's ground-out served allowed Hufford to score from third base to make the score 1-0.

The game remained 1-0 until the bottom of the fifth, where San Jose State's Janessa Lozano led off the home-half of the frame with a solo homer to centerfield. Although the Spartans managed to load the bases within that inning, the Griffs kept SJSU from capitalizing further.

The seventh inning brought excitement for both teams, as Canisius retook the lead after Morgan Altman scored on an error by the Spartan infield. However, San Jose State quickly tied the game at 2-2 in the bottom of the seventh on an RBI-single by Mackenzie Drake.

In the bottom of the ninth, the host Spartans scored the win after Makayla Englestad's walk-off single with the bases loaded ended the game.

Canisus pitcher Emily Nicosia was the tough-luck loser in the circle after she went the distance and threw 154 pitches. Nicosia allowed three runs on nine hits to go with four strikeouts.

Game Notes
• Tuesday's games marked the third and fourth times these schools have met on the diamond, with each team scoring a win when the Griffs and Spartans met back during the 2009 campaign.
• This marked the first time these two teams have played a doubleheader. The previous two meetings between the programs were single-games.
• With her double in game two, and her base hit in the first game, Castro extended her hitting streak to 13-straight games, which dates back to last season.
• Hufford's double to lead off the second game is her first two-base hit of the season and the eighth of her career.
• This marks the first extra inning game for Canisius of the season and the first since falling to Siena on April 21, 2019.
• The extra inning game marks the second longest appearance for Nicosia in her career.

Up Next
• Canisius will return to action with a single-game against San Jose State on Thursday, Feb. 20. Game time is set for 7 p.m., eastern.
