Barczewski, Lapid Lead Hockey to 1-0 Shutout of Air Force

Sophomore Lee Lapid scored the lone goal of the contest and freshman netminder Jacob Barczewski stopped all 23 shots he faced to lead Canisius to a 1-0 victory over Air Force
in Atlantic Hockey action Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Lapid tallied his ninth goal of the campaign with a breakaway goal in the first, providing all the support that Barczewski would need to help the Golden Griffins (8-15-5, 7-10-5-3 AHA) take four of six points from the weekend series.

Freshman Alex Schilling recorded 30 saves between the pipes for the visiting Falcons (8-15-5, 8-11-5-4 AHA).

Lapid scored what ended up being the lone goal of the contest at the 11:23 mark of the first period, collecting a pass from junior Austin Alger in the neutral zone and streaking behind the Air Force defense before sliding the puck between the legs of Schilling to give the Griffs the lead.

Canisius kept pressuring throughout the contest, but was unable to add an insurance marker as it hit three posts and had a goal disallowed during the second period when it was ruled that the official was in the action of blowing his whistle during a goalmouth scramble that found its way into the Air Force net.

Thankfully, Barczewski would made Lapid's opening goal stand as he stopped all seven shots he faced in the first and followed that with a pair of eight-save efforts in both the second and third to record his first collegiate shutout.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Postgame Comments
"I'm really proud of the victory. We talked before the game; not calling it a must win at all, but off of last night it was a really important game for us to come out with three points. We were able to do that tonight. It took everything. We were strong from beginning to end, which was good because we needed to make that adjustment from last night. We got great goaltending, we got gritty plays, we got skill plays. It took everything and I was happy with how we played this evening.

"Our structure was great; our effort was great. When I think about how we played, we definitely played together. It felt like Air Force wasn't able to get momentum, or really many scoring chances at all in the game. When I think about a defensive game from us, that's what it's going to take. At the same time, offensively we were strong, which was really good. So, it was a nice, complete game for us.

"It felt like we were ahead by more than 1-0, but you're looking up going. It's just reality, its 1-0. There were some moments maybe late in the second where emotions started to get high; there was a disallowed goal that we felt like we earned. You could maybe feel a little bit of frustration creeping in, but it subsided very quickly, so I was very happy with the bench demeanor that we were able to calm that down and go out and do our job and play. But when you look up and it's 1-0 and you feel like you deserve to be up a couple, that can get to a lot of teams, but at this time of year and approaching the playoffs, we're going to need to know whether we're up or down, or down a couple or up a couple, we're going to have to play like that."
