Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener to No. 4/4 Syracuse

Game Recap
No. 4/4 Syracuse (1-0, 0-0 ACC) led from the opening draw with the help of seven goals and one assist from Emily Hawryschuk to defeat the Golden Griffins, 21-6, Friday evening in non-conference women's lacrosse action from the Carrier Dome in Syracuse, N.Y.

Syracuse jumped out to a four-goal lead as it scored on four of its first five possessions of the contest. Junior Miranda Malvaso put a stop to the Cuse run as she took the feed from sophomore Katie Smolensky and deposited it in the back of the net.

The Orange scored back-to-back goals following the Griffs first tally of the game to make it a 6-1 game, however, Canisius responded with two goals of its own. The first came from Marissa Malvaso on the pass from Smolensky and then Smolensky got one of her own less than a minute later.

Syracuse dominated the next 13-minutes of action, scoring seven unanswered goals before senior Bryar Cummings found the back of the net to put a stop to the bleeding. The Orange would get the goal back with under two minutes remaining in the first half to take a 14-4 lead into the locker room.

Cuse scored the first six goals of the second half, forcing the Blue and Gold to make a change in net as junior Emily Van Kessel took over for classmate Lauren Gilbert with 14 minutes remaining in the game with the score 19-4. Smolensky scored her second goal of the game on a free position at the 8:42 mark of the second half.

Marissa found her sister Miranda Malvaso for the Griffs final goal of the game, but the damage was already done as Syracuse took the season opener by a final score of, 21-6.

Canisius (0-1, 0-0 MAAC) was led by Smolensky finished with four points on two goals and two assists, followed by two points from both Marissa and Miranda. The Griffs tallied a total of 15 shots, nine of which were on goal. Gilbert, who started the game in net finished with 12 saves, while her replacement Van Kessel recorded one stop in just over 10-minutes of action.

Syracuse had nine players record a goal in the win, highlighted by hat tricks from Morgan Alexander, Meaghan Tyrrell and Megan Carney. Both Carney and Hawryshuck recorded eight points in the win. The Orange put a total of 34 shots on goal, caused 10 turnovers and won 23 of the games 29 draws. Asa Goldstock started the night in cage for the Orange, making two saves. She was replaced by Hannah Van Middlem who stopped one shot.

Head Coach Allison Daley's Postgame Comments
"Anytime you play a high caliber team like Syracuse, every play makes you better and that is what we need to take away from tonights game. Syracuse is a team that will play deep into May with some of the best players in the nation, with that we made some good plays and transitioned the ball well and capitalized on opportunities offensively."

"I thought we had a solid performance from Katie, Bryar and Miranda. In addition I though our freshman who played gained some valuable experience to help us move forward. Gilbert was strong in net and made some great saves for us."

"We will be better moving forward."
