Led by five goals from Maddie Hart, Duquesne defeated visiting Canisius, 11-10, Wednesday afternoon in non-conference women's lacrosse action from Rooney Field in Pittsburgh, Pa.

Six other Dukes (1-1) found the back of the net to go with Hart's five-goal outing. Elizabeth Petrosky finished the game with three points on a goal and two assists. Michaela Connelly (1g, 1a) and Tina St. Clair (2g) also recorded multi-point games in the win. Goalkeeper Maddy Curtis stopped five shots to earn her first win of the season. The Dukes put 22 of their 28 shots on goal, won 13 of the games 23 draw controls and caused 22 Canisius turnovers.

Junior Marissa Malvaso recorded her first hat trick of the season to pace a Canisius (0-2) attack that saw five players record multiple points. Miranda Malvaso and Bryar Cummings tallied two goals and a helper in the contest while reigning MAAC Player of the Week Katie Smolensky finished the game with one goal and two assists. Freshman Paige Stachura scored twice in the loss. Junior goalie Lauren Gilbert played all 60 minutes, stopping 11 shots.

Canisius opened the scoring when Marissa found the back of the net four and a half minutes into the contest. The Dukes responded with four unanswered goals over the next ten minutes of action to pull out to a 4-1 lead over the visitors.

The Griffs would work the score back to even, 5-5, as Miranda, Cummings and Stachura all found the back of the cage for their first tallies of the contest before Marissa added her second goal of the game on a free-position attempt to tie the game at five apiece. With 14-seconds remaining in the first half, Petrosky put one past Gilbert to give the Dukes a one-goal advantage at the break.

Duquesne came out hot in the second half, scoring twice in a span of three minutes build a three-point cushion. Canisius started trading goals with the home team over the next 13 minutes of game action to stay within three, 11-8, with 12:03 left in regulation.

With just over seven minutes remaining in the game, Cummings scored on a free-position attempt to put the Griffs down two. Six-plus minutes of scoreless action followed Cummings' tally before Smolensky found the back of the net to make it a one-goal game with just over a minute remaining.

Canisius had a chance to tie the game with a final possession, but it turned the ball over with 15 seconds remaining, allowing the Dukes to run out the clock and hold on for the win.

Head Coach Allison Daley's Postgame Comments
"Overall, we competed and worked hard today and those are two positives we can take away from the game. We showed resiliency to battle back and tie the game before the end of the half and to get within one at the end. That is something we needed to see with a young team."

"The biggest thing we need to improve on is valuing the ball through transition. Our defense was solid and they made some key stops near the end of the game, giving us an opportunity to win."
