Warner Leads Baseball to 3-2 Win at Marshall

RECAP
With senior left-hander Kyle Warner tossing a career-high eight innings, the Canisius baseball team earned a 3-2 victory over Marshall Saturday afternoon at the Kennedy Center YMCA Field in Huntington, W.Va. The Golden Griffins used a pair of run-scoring doubles to edge out the Thundering Herd despite Nick Jodway's early home run for the home team.

With the win, Canisius improved to 2-8 on the season, while Marshall shifted to a 1-7 record for the 2020 campaign.

For the third-straight start, Warner set a career-high in innings pitched with his eight frames on Saturday, as the south paw held the Herd to just four hits and two walks while striking out three Marshall batters.

The Herd got on the board first, as Jodway connected on a two-run homer in the second inning.

Canisius responded in the third, as sophomore Dylan Vincent was able to plate his fellow sophomore, Kyle Kush, while redshirt-junior Gibson Krzeminski later doubled to score another run and even the game at 2-2.

Sophomore Mike Steffan gave the Blue and Gold a 3-2 lead in the sixth, as the first baseman's two-out double brought home Krzeminski from second.

The score remained unchanged through the conclusion of the game, as Warner handed the ball off to junior Joe Barberio in the ninth. Barberio proceeded to retire the Herd in order to earn his first save as a Griff and secure the one-run victory.

Warner picked up the winning decision for the second time in three starts on the season, while Barberio fanned two Marshall hitters in his one inning of relief.

Wade Martin was on the losing end of the decision, as the righty allowed three runs (two earned) across six innings, walking two and striking out five. Robert Kwiatkowski followed Martin by pitching three hitless innings for the Thundering Herd, punching out three Canisius hitters along the way.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Today was a good win for us for multiple reasons. We talked all week about taking care of little things and we had a hard-90 (foot) end up leading to a run, then we made something happen with two strikes that led to a run. We also played solid defense that helped keep them off the scoreboard. On top of that, we had another great start from Warner, as he has really stepped up and been a bulldog for us early on, and it is something that is great for all the young guys to see. Kyle committed himself more this year in all facets and he is being rewarded for that."

• With a single apiece Saturday, senior Jacob Victor and sophomore Dylan Vincent have tallied a hit in five of their last six games.
