Iona Beats Men’s Basketball, 86-65

Iona junior Isaiah Washington recorded a triple-double with 14 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds and fellow junior Isaiah Ross poured in a game-high 24 points on the power of six makes from 3-point land to lead the visiting Gaels to an 86-65 win over Canisius Thursday night at the Koessler Athletic Center. Iona moves to 11-13 overall and 9-8 in MAAC play with the victory, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 10-18 overall and 5-12 with the loss.
 
Iona led from wire-to-wire on Thursday, as the Gaels jumped out to an early 9-2 just 4:10 into the game. The Gaels, who led by as many as 24 points in the opening half, shot 65.5 percent from the field in the game's opening 20 minutes to take a 42-22 lead into the locker room at intermission.
 
The second half was much of the same, as the Gaels shot 63.0 percent from the field and 54.5 percent (6-for-11) from 3-point range after halftime. For the game, Iona finished the night by shooting 64.3 percent from the floor, 47.1 percent from behind the arc and the team hit all four of its chances from the free-throw line. The Gaels also posted 54 points in the paint while out-rebounding the Blue and Gold by a 36-25 clip.
 
For Canisius, three players recorded double-figures in the scoring column, led by sophomore Jordan Henderson, who scored 18 points on 6-of-9 shooting, with three of those makes coming from long-distance. Juniors Majesty Brandon and Jalanni White chipped in 12 and 10 points, respectively.
 
Canisius senior Malik Johnson scored nine points to go with eight assists and three rebounds. Johnson's assist on Henderson's 3-pointer with 11:51 left to play in the first half was the 617th of his career, allowing him to pass former Griffs guard Frank Turner for first all-time on the school's assist list.

"Give credit to Iona. They put it together tonight and they played a great game. We didn't respond with enough to overcome their effort. They have some great players that played great."
 
"We struggled with just about everything in the first half. Their pace was difficult for us and we had some match-up issues that presented us with some problems."
 
Game Notes
• This was the 77th all-time meeting between the two teams, with Iona leading the series 44-33.
• The 21-point loss for the Griffs is the team's largest defeat at home in a MAAC game since Jan. 24, 2016 when the Blue and Gold lost to Siena 99-78.
• Henderson is averaging 11.5 points per game in four career contests against Iona.
• Johnson has now distributed five-or more assists 19 times this season and 69 times in his career.
• Senior Corey Brown played in his 110th collegiate game on Thursday, which includes his three-year career at Northern Arizona.
