Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Defeated by Boise State and Santa Clara on Day Two

The Canisius softball team completed day two of the Silicon Valley Classic with two losses. The Golden Griffins fell in game one to Boise State, 3-0, before losing, 8-1, to host Santa Clara.

With the losses, Canisius fell to 5-7 on the season, while Boise State moved to 9-5 and Santa Clara shifted to 6-7 on the season.

Game One Recap
Despite early opportunities by both teams, Canisius and Boise State played three innings of shutout softball before Boise State got on the board. In the bottom of the third, Bradie Fillmore singled to the pitcher with runners on second and third to plate the first run of the ballgame. Jessica McKay's sacrifice fly into center field extended the Boise State lead to 2-0 later in the inning.

The Griffs' best chance to get back into the game came in the top of the seventh when freshman Teagan Rice singled into center. It was then that senior Sue Vi entered as a pinch runner for Rice, as she was able to advance two bases before a fly out ended the game.

Freshman Sarah Cantley started in the circle for Canisius, throwing three innings and allowing five hits. Sophomore Alexis Churchill came on in relief and went the rest of the way, going three innings and recording one strikeout while allowing four hits.

Game Two Recap
Host Santa Clara came out swinging with three runs in the first inning of play, powered by back-to-back doubles from Ashley Trierweiler and Emma Bickford along with two sacrifice flies.

The Broncos continued to add onto their lead, making the score 6-0, until junior Lindsi Dennis broke the shutout in the fourth with an RBI-single into center field. However, that did not stop Santa Clara from piling on, as the home team added three more runs in the bottom half of the fourth.

Junior Emily Nicosia got the initial nod for the Griffs, pitching the first two innings and striking out one batter. Redshirt-senior Lauren Castro came in for Nicosia in the bottom of the third, allowing one hit, one walk and three unearned runs in two innings of work.

Game Notes
• Saturday's loss to Santa Clara marks the third five-inning game the Griffs have competed in this season.
• Castro ended her 14-game hitting streak, which dated back to last season.
• Lindsi Dennis was perfect at the plate in the nightcap, going 2-for-2 against Santa Clara.
