Game Recap: Softball |

Softball Scores Two Wins at Silicon Valley Classic

The Canisius softball team played two games on Friday on the first day of the Silicon Valley Classic in Santa Clara, Calif, and the Golden Griffins scored two wins, as the Blue and Gold defeated North Dakota 5-0 before earning a 2-1 victory against Yale in the second game of the day.

After Friday's pair of wins, Canisius sits at 5-5 on the season, while North Dakota fell to 3-7 on the year and Yale starts its 2020 season 0-1.

Game One Recap
The Griffs scored four runs in the top-half of the first and never looked back, as the Blue and Gold posted its second shutout win of the season with the 5-0 win over North Dakota Friday morning.

After back-to-back base hits by juniors Erin Hufford and Kara Paradowski to start the game, sophomore Hannah Catallo-Stooks put Canisius up 2-0 with a single through the left side of the infield that pushed Hufford and Paradowski across the plate. Catallo-Stooks would score moments later on a sac-fly by senior Morgan Altman, and junior Lindsi Dennis capped the scoring with an RBI-single to center that allowed redshirt-senior Lauren Castro to score.

The four runs in the top of the first were more than enough support for junior Emily Nicosia, who picked up her first win of the season in the circle after she went the distance and allowed just three hits to go with three strikeouts. Canisius added an insurance run in the top-half of the seventh when Catallo-Stooks singled down the right field line to push Paradowski in from second base.

Canisius had 10 hits in the win over North Dakota, and Paradowski collected three of those, including a double in the seventh inning. Hufford had two hits and scored a run, while Catallo-Stooks reached base three times with two hits and a walk while driving in three RBI and scoring once.

Game Two Recap
Canisius and Yale remained scoreless and hitless through four innings of play before Paradowski's double in the fifth served as the game's first base runner. The game remained scoreless until the bottom of the sixth, where Canisius scored twice to take a 2-0 lead. Castro pushed Paradowski across the dish to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Blue and Gold, and the Griffs added another run moments later when freshman pinch-runner Tiara Johnson scored on an error by Yale's infield.

Yale cut Canisius' lead in half at 2-1 in the top-half of the seventh on an RBI-double off the bat of Sydney Grobman, but the Griffs' defense threw Grobman out at second after she rounded the base to seal the win.

Sophomore pitcher Alexis Churchill went the distance and allowed two hits while striking out four to earn her first win of the season in the circle.

Game Notes
• The wins on Friday marked the first time Canisius has won a game in the state of California since Feb. 15, 2016 when the Griffs beat UC Riverside in the first game of a non-league doubleheader.
• The win in game one for Nicosia was the 10th of her career, and the shutout was her first since her freshman campaign in 2018.
• The three RBI for Catallo-Stooks against North Dakota stands as her eighth career game with multiple runs batted in.
• Castro now has 92 career RBI, which ranks 15th in school history.
• Game two's victory serves as Churchill's third career win.
