Softball Drops Series Finale at San Jose State

San Jose State junior Grace Garvey drove in two runs with a double in the second inning and teammate Jocylyn Vidal drove in a pair of runs with a triple in the bottom of the third to help lead the host Spartans to a 6-1 win over Canisius in non-conference softball action Thursday evening in San Jose, Calif.

The win, San Jose State's 10th straight, the Spartans improved to 10-2 on the season, while the Golden Griffins fell to 3-5 with the loss.

Canisius senior Ashley Barnett had two hits and drove in the Griffs' lone run, while sophomore Hannah Catallo-Stooks added two hits, including a double for the Blue and Gold. Senior Gianna Degaltini also had two hits for Canisius, which included a double in fourth inning.

The Griffs took an early 1-0 lead in the top-half of the first on Barnett's bunt-single that allowed junior Kara Paradowski to score from third base. The Griffs had a chance to add some more runs in the opening frame with two runners on and one out, however, San Jose State starter Caroline Bowman got out of the jam with a fly-ball and a groundout.

San Jose State took the lead in the home-half of the second with two runs scoring on Garvey's double. From there, the Spartans broke the game open with a four-run third inning, highlighted by Vidal's triple down the right-field line that pushed two runs across the dish.

Canisius freshman Sarah Cantley took the loss in the circle for the Griffs after she allowed five runs on four hits in 2.1 innings of work. Sophomore Alexis Churchill came on in relief of Cantley and allowed one run on four hits while fanning two in 3.2 innings of action. San Jose State's Shannan Haddad picked up the win in relief for the Spartans after she allowed just two hits and struck out two in 3.2 innings.
