Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Falls to Michigan in Midweek Matchup

Bryce Clay and Kyle Mack combined for 11 goals to pace Michigan in a 16-8 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's lacrosse action Tuesday at the U-M Lacrosse Stadium in Ann Arbor, Mich.

Clay tallied six goals and Mack added five to pace a potent attack for the host Wolverines (2-1). Josh Zawada recorded two goals and added four assists while Christian Ford chipped in a pair of tallies.

Senior Mathieu Boissonneault and freshman Nathan Conry recorded hat tricks for the Golden Griffins (0-3). Junior John McCain and sophomore Mike Penna added individual markers while freshman goalie Otto Bergmann made 16 saves between the pipes for the Blue and Gold.

Michigan never trailed in the contest, holding a 2-0 lead late in the first quarter before exploding for four goals in the final 1:16 of the opening frame to build a 6-0 cushion.

Boissonneault attempted to get Canisius back into the contest, recording a pair of tallies in the opening six minutes of the second to offset a Wolverines goal and make it a 7-2 contest.

Michigan regained control moments later, however, using a goal from Clay to spark a 4-1 run that closed out the first half and gave the Wolverines an 11-3 advantage heading into the locker room.

The third quarter saw Canisius record two of the first three goals of the frame, with McCain and Conry finding the back of the net to trim the deficit to 12-5.

Michigan once again had the answer for the Griffs, registering the final four goals of the third to expand their lead to 16-5.

Canisius did all of the scoring in the fourth quarter, with Conry completing his hat trick in the opening 5:15 of the stanza before Penna got on the scoresheet in the last minute of the contest to determine the final eight-goal margin.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments
"We came out and we competed for 60 minutes of lacrosse, which was the most important thing. Early on, we were playing a lot of defense after some self-inflicted errors in our clearing game, but we were holding strong and then we give them too many opportunities get out on us early with that 6-0 lead. If we bridge the gap there and hold them to one or two, maybe three, and get one ourselves, it's a big difference in the game.

"Otto was 50 percent and as a goalie you want to be at 50 percent and above. So, he did a great job. We've got a long way to go with him on some things, but I was really happy with his effort today. Nate (Conry) also stepped up and had some success, which was awesome to see. It's just going to help build his confidence as a young freshman playing a lot of minutes for us. And then, it was Boiss being Boiss and doing the things that have made him great the past couple of years. I was excited to see him have the game that he did today and hopefully we can use all that as momentum going into our game Saturday at Hartford."
