Game Recap: Women's Lacrosse |

Late Goal Lifts Merrimack Over Women's Lacrosse

Game Recap
Merrimack's Megan Dzialo found the back of the net with 19 seconds remaining in the contest to lift the Warriors over the Golden Griffins, 10-9, in non-conference women's lacrosse action from the Pinnacle Athletic Campus in Victor, N.Y.

With the contest tied at five-apiece heading into the second-half, Merrimack scored four unanswered goals, highlighted by three tallies from Natalie Calkins to give the visitors a 9-5 advantage, with 16:27 remaining in the contest.

Senior Emma Mryglod ended Canisius' (0-3) scoreless drought with her first tally of the season at the 12:53 mark to put the Griffs down three, 9-6. Two goals from junior Marissa Malvaso pulled the Blue and Gold within one with 3:23 left in the game. Her sister, Marissa Malvaso tied the contest 1:17 later as she bounced one past the Merrimack keeper.

The Warriors would win the ensuing draw control and set up in their offensive end of the field for a chance to win it. Canisius thwarted the first attempt as good defensive play kept Merrimack from winning the game on a free-position shot attempt. However, Merrimack would retain possession and Dzialo connected on her game-winner as the shot clock wound down.

Merrimack (1-2) was paced by Calkins who finished the game with four points on three goals and one assist. Ally Dacosta had three points with one goal and two helpers in the win. Tammy Nguyen earned her first win of the season as she stopped 15 of the Griffs 24 shots on goal. The Warriors won 12 of the games 21 draw controls and successfully cleared the ball 19-of-28 times, including going 12-for-15 in the second half.

Marissa and Miranda highlighted the Griffs attack Sunday afternoon, recording a combined nine points. Marissa finished the game with five points as the junior recorded two goals and added a trio of assists in the contest. Miranda added a natural hat trick and one helper to total four points. Sophomore Katie Smolensky scored twice and assisted on another in the loss. Gilbert moves to 0-3 on the season after making six saves in net for Canisius.

Head Coach Allison Daley's Postgame Comments
"We can not show up and play eight minutes in the first half and 12 minutes in the second half and expect to win a lacrosse game. We talked to our players a lot since Wednesday about putting together a full 60-minute game and valuing the lacrosse ball and that was absolutely not the case today, we went off our own agenda and did our own thing and it hurt us in the end."

"We do have a resilient group here, we are young, but, every game they get more experience."
