Five Things to Know as the Griffs Open the 2020-21 Season at Home

1. Return to Play
The Canisius Golden Griffins have been given the green light to return to play after delay due to the COVID-19 Pandemic. The matchup with Buffalo will serve as the Griffs' singular non-conference game before starting MAAC play at Marist on Dec. 11 and 12.

2. Zeigler Earns All-Big 4 Honors
Senior Anndea Zeigler was named to the Preseason All-Big 4 Second Team, which was voted on by the media and athletic communications staffs that cover Buffalo, Canisius, Niagara and St. Bonaventure. As one of two seniors on the 2020-21 Griffs squad, Zeigler has averaged 5.5 points and 2.3 rebounds per game in her 60-game career with Canisius.

3. New Faces
Canisius added three new members to the 2020-21 team this offseason. Senior Ella Vaatanen transferred from LIU, where she led the Sharks with 25 blocks during the 2018-19 season. Rochester native, Kayla Jackson, joins the Griffs after starting her college career at UMBC, where she averaged 12 minutes a game, as well as 3.8 points and 3.6 rebounds per contest. Dani Haskell is the Blue and Gold's lone freshman this season. She joins the program after leading New York State in scoring during her high school career, where she averaged 31 points per game and finished her high school career with a record-setting 3,227 points.

4. Crosstown Rivals
For the 47th time in program history, Canisius will take on cross-town rival Buffalo, with the Griffs leading the all-time series, 30-17. Sunday's game will mark the first time Canisius has opened the year against Buffalo since the 2012-13 campaign.

5. Up Next
Canisius will open conference play in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., Dec. 11-12 when the Griffs play at Marist. Game time for both contests is set for 5 p.m.

All Canisius basketball games at the Koessler Athletic Center will be held without fans as a result of COVID-19 protocols. Only essential game management and credentialed media will be permitted until further notice.
