Monmouth Rolls Past Men’s Basketball

Game Recap
The host Monmouth Hawks scored the game's first 11 points and ended the contest shooting 58.7 percent from the field and 59.1 percent from 3-point range en route to a 97-69 win over Canisius Monday afternoon in MAAC men's basketball action in West Long Branch, N.J.

With the victory, Monmouth moves to 3-2 overall and 3-1 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 1-3 overall and 1-3 in conference action with their third-straight defeat.

Twelve of the 14 Monmouth players that saw time in the game on Monday scored at least two points, led by senior Deion Hammond and sophomore Donovann Toatley, who each posted 16 points for the Hawks. Hammond also recorded six rebounds, two assists, two steals and a blocked shot for the home team, which has now beaten Canisius in five-straight meetings, dating back to 2019.

For Canisius, senior Majesty Brandon, junior Malek Green, sophomore Malik Brooks and freshman Siem Uijtendaal all had 10 points in the loss. Sophomore Akrum Ahemed matched a career-high with nine points off the bench, while junior Ahamadou Fofana added seven points, three rebounds and three assists.

Monmouth picked up right where it left off after Sunday's game, scoring the game's first 11 points in the game's opening 4:37 before Fofana was able to connect on a 3-point field goal from the left wing to make the score 11-3 with 14:34 left in the opening frame. The Griffs were able to get within six points at 25-19 with 8:51 remaining in the first half after Brandon drilled a 3-pointer from the top of the key off a pass from fellow senior Jalanni White, but that would be as close as the Griffs would get for the remainder of the contest, as Monmouth went on a 21-4 run over the game's next 3:31 to seal the victory. In that run for Monmouth, Hammond scored nine of the Hawks' points on the power of three 3-point field goal makes.

Canisius shot 36.1 percent from the field and made six of its 30 tries from behind the arc for the game. The Griffs were credited with 16 assists on 22 made field goals, led by freshman Asa Beyah, who was credited with a team-high five assists in his 18 minutes of action.

Head Coach Reggie Witherspoon's Postgame Comments
"Monmouth is a very good basketball team. They're an experienced group. They play extremely hard and they play an unselfish. We need to get back to work and prepare ourselves for two more MAAC games against Saint Peter's this weekend."

Game Notes
• Monday's game was the 18th all-time meeting between the two programs. Monmouth leads the series 12-6.
• The 54 points allowed by the Griffs in the game's first half are the most for the Blue and Gold since Canisius gave up 55 points to Monmouth in the second half when the teams met in Buffalo on Feb. 14, 2020.
• Monday marks the first time Canisius had four players score in double-figures since Feb. 12, 2020 at Niagara.
• Green and sophomore Jacco Fritz each had seven rebounds for Canisius in the game. Green's seven boards on Monday makes him the first Canisius player to pull down five-or more rebounds in his first four career games with the program since Jamal Reynolds did the same to start the 2014-15 campaign.
