Luke Urban to be Inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame

Former Canisius head men's basketball and football coach Luke Urban will be officially inducted into the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame on Saturday, Nov. 14.

Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame president Greg Merkle has announced the 30th Anniversary class will be introduced virtually as part of a four-part series on WGR 550-AM. The live shows will be broadcast from 10-11 a.m. on four consecutive Saturdays, running through November 21. Howard Simon will serve as the program's host.

An end for the Buffalo All-Americans from 1921-24, the Boston College product was named to the George Halas All-NFL team in 1922 and to a pair of all NFL teams in 1923. He also played three seasons for the Bisons from 1928-30 after playing Major League Baseball for the Boston Braves.

During his time on the gridiron, Urban found his second profession on the sidelines, guiding the Canisius football team from 1921-30 and the basketball program from 1921-24 and then again from 1925-31.

Named the school's head coach in both sports at the age of 23, he led the Golden Griffin football team to a 46-27-7 mark and the men's basketball team to a record of 68-49. His 46 wins as the head football coach stand as the second most in school history, while his basketball teams posted winning records in seven of his nine seasons on the bench.

For his coaching career, Urban was inducted to the Canisius Sports Hall of Fame in 1976.
