Men’s Lacrosse Student-Athletes Reflect on Summer Internship Opportunities

Despite all of the restrictions and uncertainty that exist within the business world due to the COVID-19 pandemic, members of the Canisius men's lacrosse program were still able to gain valuable real-world training through a variety of internship experiences over the summer.

Student-athletes were able to work with a variety of highly-reputable organizations, including Constellation Brands Inc., KeyBank and Philadelphia Insurance Companies. The Griffs worked throughout the United States, with assignments that included spots in Colorado, New York and Texas.

"We are always proud of the effort of our student-athletes who search for internship opportunities in their respective majors, but especially in an job market as unpredictable as the one they experienced this year due to the pandemic," head coach Mark Miyashita said. "All of these young men were praised for their work as they represented both themselves and Canisius to the best of their abilities as they continued to take the proper steps to prepare for their respective futures after their time on Main Street."

Read below as each student-athlete reflects on their respective summer work experience.

Thomas ANiol headshot Thomas Aniol
Company Name: Transwestern
Position: Summer Associate
Location: Dallas, Texas

Aniol on his experience: "This summer, I participated in a formal, structured commercial real estate internship program that focused on Office Tenant Representation and Agency Leasing Services that incorporated both real world and classroom experience via scheduled Zoom meetings. This experience encompassed all aspects of the commercial real estate process, and featured multiple in-person projects at the Downtown Dallas office. Under the guidance of a Senior Principal, I completed rigorous, project-based work with peer teams involving real life scenarios such as crafting sales letters, client pitch presentations, and hunting for prospective tenants while leveraging the full capabilities of CoStar. I contributed to the Summer Associate team while gaining valuable experience in other areas such as Occupier Solutions, Industrial, Retail, and Investment Services."
Mike Carbone headshot Mike Carbone
Company Name: Midland
Position: Digital Media Marketing Intern
Location: Buffalo, N.Y.

Carbone on his experience: "Throughout the summer I created a variety of projects for Midland, some being magazine advertisements, promotional videos, and time lapses of their processes. On a daily basis I was either in the field gathering photos and videos, or at home working virtually while I edited these together."
Ryan Cicci headshot Ryan Cicci
Company Name: Pillinger Miller Tarallo, LLP
Position: Paralegal Intern
Location: Syracuse, N.Y.

Cicci on this experience: "As an intern at Pillinger Miller Tarallo, LLP, I learned how to build a case, along with how to prepare for a mediation or deposition. I learned how to correctly put information on the cases in the correct place to stay organized. I also did anything the attorneys and other paralegals needed help with. I learned how to be disciplined and organized. I had to pay attention to every little detail because you were dealing with someone's livelihood and you cannot mess up on the little details of a case."
Brady DHont Headshot 2019-20 Brady D'Hont
Company Name: Constellation Brands Inc.
Position: Community Affairs Intern
Location: Victor, N.Y.

D'Hont on his experience: "I was fortunate to still have an internship this summer, especially with a Fortune 500 company in Constellation Brands, an American producer and marketer of beer, wine and spirits. Each week, we met virtually with other interns across all parts of the company and the country where we heard from executives and learned about all different facets of the firm. This included the rising trends of e-commerce, the financial risks and returns of investing in Canopy Growth Company (a Canadian-based cannabis company), the three portfolios of beer, wine and spirits and the brands they have acquired such as Corona and eventually plan to acquire. I had a unique experience where I also worked for New York Kitchen, a Non-Profit affiliate of Constellation. I worked directly with two other interns and developed social media marketing plans, press releases, assisted in fundraising events and explored current and new partners in the culinary, wine and spirits categories for NYK.

"At the end of the summer, myself and four other interns within the company were tasked with a final presentation where we pitched a new idea "from the eyes of Gen Z" to executives across Constellation Brands. I had a great summer at Constellation and will forever be fortunate for that opportunity."

Kevin Eells headshot Kevin Eells
Company: University of Buffalo Medical Research Team
Position: Research Assistant
Location: Buffalo, N.Y.

Eells on his experience: "For this project, I aided three medical students on their research project, which investigated the prevalence of illicit stimulant use amongst medical students and their motivations for doing so. My job was to find past research studies that were relevant and summarize them. The study is ongoing and I continue to work with these students in hopes of publishing a paper in the coming months."
CJ Goss headshot CJ Goss
Company Name: Philadelphia Insurance Companies
Position: Marketing Intern
Location: Amherst, N.Y.

Goss on his experience: "During my time at Philadelphia Insurance Companies, I was tasked with doing market research for current as well as potential clients on what services we can offer them policy wise in an attempt to gain more business for the company while providing top-notch service to them."
Jake Hardy headshot Jake Hardy

Position: Software Engineering Intern
Location: Boulder, Colo.

Hardy on his experience: "Helped build more than 80 percent of internationalization ground work on the web app allowing TrueCoach to go international and push into multiple language markets. Saved company 5 percent of front-end developers' workflow time by implementing ESLint rules and increasing pattern alignment across the Ember.js codebase. Wierzbicki_Ryan headshot Ryan Wierzbicki
Company Name: KeyBank
