John Maddock Announces Retirement at the End of 2019-20 Academic Year

John Maddock, Canisius' Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs, announced Monday that he plans to retire at the end of the 2019-20 academic year after nearly four decades of service to the College's athletic department.

The athletic department's senior-most employee, Maddock came to Canisius in the summer of 1981 as the school's sports information and promotions director. Over the next 39 years, he has held various titles and handled numerous responsibilities within the athletic department and around campus. In May 2019, he was elevated to the position title of senior associate athletic director for external affairs, where he oversees marketing, promotions, merchandise sales, licensing and special events, while also overseeing the department's corporate partnership, ticket office and communications efforts.

"John is a consummate professional, as evident in the loyalty and dedication he has brought to Canisius every day during his tenure at the College," Canisius Director of Athletics Bill Maher said. "He has been a friend and mentor to me during my time at Canisius, and I will be forever grateful for the guidance and counsel he has provided me. However, it has been his impact on the many student-athletes, work-study students, graduate assistants and coaches that has been so valuable to the College over the past four decades.

"John is among the College's most reliable, loyal and hardworking staff members. I am thankful each day for his service to our Athletics team and the assistance he has provided me."

The director of the annual Blue and Gold Golf Classic for 23 years, Maddock serves as the sport supervisor for Canisius' baseball, hockey and golf programs, while also serving as the chair of the MAAC Baseball Championship Committee to go along with his appointments on the Atlantic Hockey Association Board of Directors, where he is also on the Executive Committee and the Chair of the Brand Awareness Committee. He has also been a long-time member of the Canisius Sports Hall of Fame selection committee and is currently serving as the athletic department's liaison for the College's Sesquicentennial Celebration.

Through his career, Maddock won a variety of writing and publication awards from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), and he successfully submitted 21 nominations for Academic All-American honors. In 1987, he was recognized as the Sports Information Director of the Year by Eastern Basketball and in June 1998, he was presented with the Irving T. Marsh Award for service to the sports information profession by ECAC-SIDA.

A graduate of Western Illinois University, Maddock received his bachelor's degree in recreation and park administration in 1976 and his master's degree in athletic administration in 1978. In addition to his duties at Canisius, Maddock is the former chair of the CoSIDA Committee on Committees. He also served on the CoSIDA Academic All-America Committee and is currently a vice president on the Board of Directors for the Greater Buffalo Sports Hall of Fame.

Maddock, and his wife of 32 years, Priscilla, reside in Snyder, N.Y. The couple has two adult daughters, Mackenzie and Mikaela.
