Monmouth Knocks Off Men’s Basketball

Game Recap
Monmouth shot 50.0 percent from the field, made eight 3-point field goals and turned 22 Canisius turnovers into 28 points, as the host Hawks defeated the Golden Griffins 84-65 Friday night at OceanFirst Bank Center in West Long Branch, N.J. The win moves Monmouth to 8-6 overall and 2-1 in MAAC play, while the Griffs slipped to 5-10 overall and 0-4 in conference action with their sixth-straight loss.

Monmouth guard Ray Salnave scored 23 points to lead all scorers in the win for the Hawks, and he also grabbed seven rebounds. Fellow guard Samuel Chaput added 18 points, four assists and two steals to the winning effort, while forward Mustapha Traore chipped in 10 points.

For Canisius, freshmen Jacco Fritz and Armon Harried each scored 15 points in the loss, while senior guard Malik Johnson posted nine points, a career-high 12 rebounds and four assists. The Griffs shot 40.0 percent from the field while making 5-of-18 tries from 3-point land in the losing cause.

An offensive rebound and a put-back by junior Jalanni White tied the game at 7-7 3:12 seconds into the contest before Monmouth pulled away with a 9-0 run over the game's next 1:12 to take a 16-7 lead. Harried hit a pair of free-throws with 8:03 left in the opening frame to cut the Hawks' cushion to 24-20, but Monmouth closed the opening stanza on a 14-7 run, capped by two 3-point makes in the final 20 seconds of the half to send the home team into the locker room up 38-27.

In the second half, Canisius cut the Monmouth lead to eight points at 53-45 with 11:03 remaining in the contest, but Monmouth scored the game's next eight points over 1:41 to make the score 61-45 in favor of the home team.

Head Coach Reggie Witherspoon's Postgame Comments
"Right now, we are in a situation where we have guys playing a lot of minutes, and we have other guys playing all of the minutes. Some of those guys that we're counting on just haven't been through a conference schedule, where we are throwing a lot at them and they are not yet accustomed to both the mental and physical demands of conference play."

"This time of year, there is very little margin for error. When you get into the heat of the game, typically, the first thing that goes is the concentration that is required when handling the ball, and tonight we made too many mistakes with the basketball. We knew [Monmouth] was going to pressure us, and I think we made some good reads to exploit that pressure, but we didn't score consistently. Then, we got into a few stretches where we'd trade a miss or a turnover and they would score quick points."

Game Notes
• This was the 15th all-time meeting between the two schools, with Monmouth leading the series 9-6.
• The Hawks have now won two straight over the Griffs after Canisius had won four-in-a-row in the series during the 2017-18 and 2018-19 regular seasons.
• Senior Corey Brown scored four points and recorded a career-high three blocked shots off the bench.
• The 15-point effort for Fritz marks the fifth time this season he's scored in double-figures.
• Harried is averaging 9.0 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in the team's last five games.
• Johnson's 12 rebounds are the most for any Canisius player this season.
