Volleyball Downed by Columbia in Straight Sets

The Canisius volleyball team could not put it all together in a loss to Columbia Saturday afternoon at Taffner Fieldhouse in Queens, N.Y. The Golden Griffins suffered their third-straight loss, as the Lions took the match in straight sets (22-25, 24-26, 22-25) to close out the Jack Kaiser Classic.

Canisius fell to 2-4 on the season, while the win moved Columbia to a 2-1 record.

Powering the Griffs' offense, sophomore Hannah Nelson finished with 11 kills (.300 hitting percentage) to go with two blocks. Outside of Nelson, senior Leah Simmons and sophomore Melina Woods both tallied nine kills, as Simmons also recorded 11 digs and an ace while Woods notched four digs. Senior Cassidy Ceriani also chipped in four kills in addition to her 29 assists and seven digs, while freshman Camille Vanleer registered three kills and four block assists. Defensively, freshman Bree Long dug 14 balls to go with four assists and senior Carly Shifflet had eight digs and two assists.

For Columbia, Chichi Ikwuazom knocked down 20 kills, while Audrey Cheng had eight kills on top of her 32 assists. Kalie Wood finished with 16 digs in the winning effort.

In the opening set, Columbia jumped out to a 12-3 advantage before the Griffs fought back with a 13-2 run to take their first lead of the day at 16-14. That did not deter the Lions, who used a late 8-1 stretch to propel themselves to a 25-22 opening-set victory despite Simmons tallying four kills and five digs in the frame for Canisius.

The second frame had the Blue and Gold keep it close with Columbia, eventually taking a lead at 13-12 off four-straight points. Unfortunately for the Griffs, the Lions surged late by taking four of the final five points in the set, winning the frame by a 26-24 score.

It was more of the same in the third set, as Canisius battled back from an early Columbia lead, eventually tying the frame at 19-19 thanks to a 4-0 run. Despite the Griffs evening the score, Columbia was able to earn a 25-22 win to take the match in three sets.
