Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women’s Soccer Drops MAAC Opener to Quinnipiac

Quinnipiac forward Selena Salas scored two goals in a span of 1:15 in the first half and then added an assist on the Bobcats' final goal of the day as Quinnipiac defeated Canisius 3-0 in MAAC women's soccer action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex.

With the win, Quinnipiac ends its two-game slide to move to 5-3-0 overall and 1-0-0 in MAAC action, while the Golden Griffins fell to 5-3-0 overall and 0-1-0 in conference action. The loss on Saturday ended the Blue and Gold's four-game win streak, the program's longest since the 2010 campaign.

The Bobcats took an early 1-0 lead in the game's 14th minute on Salas' first goal of the day and the season. The scoring play was set-up by Salas' teammate Ally Grunstein, who intercepted a failed Canisius clearing attempt and quickly found teammate Markela Bejleri at the top of the 10-yard box. Bejleri turned and found a streaking Salas as she worked toward the net, and the sophomore was able to beat Canisius goalkeeper Alana Rossi to the far-left corner to put the visiting Bobcats in the lead.

Salas wasted little time scoring her second goal of the game, as she made the score 2-0 just 1:15 seconds later. Salas' second marker was set-up off a short-corner pass from Grunstein, who finished the day with two assists. Quinnipiac capped the scoring in the contest's 67th minute after Salas played a ball into the box over a Canisius defender. There, her teammate, Kelsey Goldring was waiting, and Goldring found the back of the net for her second goal of the season.

Canisius outshot Quinnipiac 6-5 for the game, but the Bobcats held a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal. Canisius' best chance to get on the scoreboard came in the closing moments of the first half, when trailing 2-0, junior Shauna Lee got behind the Bobcats' defense, but she ended up being pressured by Quinnipiac goalkeeper Meghan Phillips, allowing the ball to roll over the end line to set-up a goal kick for the Bobcats.

Phillips made two saves in 80 minutes before she was relieved by teammate Olivia Myszewski. Rossi made one stop in goal for the Blue and Gold before she was replaced by teammate Meghan O'Neill for the last 10-plus minutes of the match.

Head Coach Todd Clark's Postgame Comments
"Obviously, this result was very frustrating in terms of starting MAAC play with such a poor result. Perhaps not in terms of losing to a quality team like Quinnipiac, as much as some of our focus and efforts at times.  There is nothing more we can do at this point but to get back to work and prepare for Manhattan next week, where I'm sure we have the ability to improve."

Game Notes
• Saturday marked the 10th all-time meeting between these two programs, with Quinnipiac leading the series 6-2-2.
• The three goals allowed by Canisius on Saturday marked the first time the Griffs gave up goals at home this season.
• Canisius was shutout for just the second time in eight games this season.

Up Next
Canisius will return to action on Saturday, Sept. 28, when the Blue and Gold travels to play at Manhattan. Game time in Riverdale, N.Y., is set for noon.
