Men’s Soccer Upended in Double Overtime at Utah Valley

Alec Felix scored in the 103rd minute to break a 3-3 tie and lift Utah Valley to a 4-3 double-overtime victory over Canisius in collegiate men's soccer action Friday at Clyde Field in Orem, Utah.

Aidan Dayton, Zach Maas and Leo Fuchs also scored for the host Wolverines (2-1-1).

Sophomore Lachlan Beever, freshman Federico Mereto and junior Manuele Cavazzoli accounted for the three goals for the Golden Griffins (1-3-0).

Felix tallied the golden goal a little more than two minutes into the second overtime session, putting home a rebound from close range after Luis Garza's initial attempt from the middle of the box was stopped by Canisius freshman keeper Fabio D'Errico.

The Griffs held a 1-0 lead at the halftime break thanks to Beever, who opened the scoring just 10:14 into the contest when he headed home a free kick from the foot of freshman Julius Schoner into the lower left-hand corner of the net for his first goal in a Canisius uniform.

Utah Valley tied the game in the 51st minute on Dayton's first of the season before taking a 2-1 lead on Zach Maas' second goal of the campaign at the 68:05 mark.

Mereto brought the Griffs level a little more than 10 minutes later, burying a feed from senior Troy Brady for his first collegiate tally to tie the game at 2-2.

The back-and-forth play continued just moments later as the teams traded goals in a 51-second span. Fuchs began the sequence with 9:25 remaining in regulation, notching his first goal of the season to put the Wolverines back in front.

Cavazzoli responded for Canisius moments later, however, using a pass from freshman Jonny Tekie to beat Utah Valley keeper Joseph Wheelright and tie the game at 3-3, forcing overtime and setting the stage for Felix's heroics.

D'Errico recorded seven saves in goal for Canisius. Wheelright finished with four stops in goal for Utah Valley.

Head Coach Dermot McGrane's Postgame Comments
"We are very disappointed about losing in double overtime, but our young team showed some real character tonight and made some positive strides forward. I finally saw some real glimpses of the kind of team we are going to become. We will learn from this experience and move on to another tough game on Tuesday night against local rival Saint Bonaventure."
