Hollins and Baseball Walk Off Against Monmouth, Clinch MAAC Berth

Redshirt-freshman Cole Hollins was the hero in extra innings, as the Canisius baseball team walked off, 3-2, over Monmouth with Hollins' 10th-inning RBI groundout Saturday evening at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

With the win, the Golden Griffins improved to 22-21 overall and 15-4 in MAAC play, clinching a berth in the MAAC Championship for the 13th-straight season, while the Hawks fell to 18-26-1 and 6-10 in conference action.

Leading the Griffs before Hollins' walk off, senior Andrew Sipowicz tossed eight innings while allowing just one earned run for his fifth-straight quality start. Fellow senior Joseph Preziuso continued to produce at the plate with another three-hit game, and junior Jacob Victor tied the game in the eighth with a two-run double. Senior Conner Morro and junior Jake Burlingame also collected two hits each for the Griffs, while Colin McCreary and Max Goione both notched two-hit performances in the losing effort.

Monmouth took advantage of a Canisius error in the first inning, as Zach Schild reached and McCreary scored to take the early lead. The Hawks added their only other run of the game later in the frame when Johnny Zega singled home Clay Koniencki.

Locked in a pitchers' duel, Sipowicz would shut down the Hawks through the next seven innings, and the offense finally broke open in the home-half of the eighth thanks to Victor's double that plated senior Mark McKenna and Burlingame.

After junior Jarod Burmaster held Monmouth in check in the ninth, Nick Houghton would do the same in the bottom of the inning, as both relievers stranded two runners.

Burmaster opened extra innings by retiring the Hawks in order, and Canisius got runners in the corners by way of a walk by redshirt-junior William Krull, a passed ball and a single by junior Stephen Bennett. With one out, Hollins hit a hard grounder to second that allowed Krull to cross home for the winning run.

Sipowicz finished his day with two runs (one unearned), seven hits and one walk in his eight frames, fanning four Hawks in the process. Burmaster, getting the winning decision, allowed one hit and struck out one batter over two innings.

On the Monmouth side, James Kelly's 4.2 shutout innings were spoiled, finishing his day with three hits and three punchouts. Ryan Lillie followed Kelly by giving up two runs in 2.2 innings, allowing five hits while getting three strikeouts. Houghton got the loss, allowing the one unearned run over two hits in his 2.1 innings, fanning three Griffs.

HEAD COACH MATT MAZUREK'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Sip (Sipowicz) had another great start. They got two runs in the first inning on a little tough luck, then he just stuck to it. He was hitting his spots, he was making good pitches in big moments, he was giving the Hawks opportunities to get themselves out, and we rode him out through eight innings.

"Setting it up with the two runs in the eighth was big. Victor in that spot did a great job for us to tie the game, he was being a hitter, and that's what Vic does: he hits. Then, late in extra innings, we got into a situation where we could start a runner and Cole put a ball in play and it worked out in our favor. He did a good job of putting the ball in play in a big spot.

"Objective No. 1, always, is you want to find a spot in the conference tournament at the end of the year. We have a storied tradition here at Canisius and to continue that tradition is pretty proud venture for us, but these guys are working their way to do what they need to do and we will get to where we strive and deserve to be.
