Game Recap: Softball |

Castro Sets Home Run Record, Softball Sweeps Quinnipiac

The Canisius softball team earned a sweep over Quinnipiac on Friday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y. The Blue and Gold took game one of the doubleheader, 4-2, before winning the afternoon matchup, 4-1. The losses moved the Bobcats to 16-32 overall and 7-11 in MAAC action, while the Golden Griffins improved to 14-29 overall and 8-10 in conference play.

GAME 42
In the first game of the day, Canisius opened up the scoring in the second inning when sophomore Lindsi Dennis took home on a wild pitch after being walked earlier in the frame. The Bobcats scored a run of their own in the following inning when Kayla Jensen singled through the right side to score Danielle Sorenson. The home team tacked on two more runs in the third after sophomore Erin Hufford singled up the middle, and sophomore Kara Paradowski hit a triple to score her. Freshman Hannah Catallo-Stooks reached on an error by the third baseman that platted Paradowski.

The score remained 3-1 in favor of Canisius until the bottom of the fifth when the Griffs tacked on their last run of the game thanks to redshirt-junior Lauren Castro, who hit an RBI single that scored Paradowski. Quinnipiac tallied a run in the sixth, but it wasn't enough as the Griffs secured the victory, 4-2.

Junior Gianna Degaltini went 3-for-3 in the game one victory while four other Griffs tabbed a hit.

Castro earned her first win of the day in the circle for Canisius, as she allowed six hits and two runs while fanning four in 7.0 innings of work.

Game 43
Canisius struck first in the late game, scoring runs on a Castro solo home run and a fielding error made by the shortstop in the second frame. The Blue and Gold added another run in the home-half of the fifth when Paradowski tripled to score Hufford, who got on earlier in the inning with a double. Quinnipiac scored its only run of the game when Alexis Otero hit an RBI single through the left side to score Megan Dyson, closing the gap, 3-1.

In the seventh inning, Castro sealed the deal with a solo-shot to left, her second of the day, to secure the win, 4-1.

Hufford, Castro and Dennis each recorded a multi-hit game in the second win of the day. Paradowski and senior Denver Keller each tabbed a hit in game two as well.

Castro went the distance for Canisius as she allowed just one run on one hit while striking out two in 7.0 innings. The Gilroy, Calif., native went 14.0 total innings, allowing just eight hits and three runs in 56 batters faced.
