Softball Drops a Pair of Close Games To Marist

The Canisius softball team was swept by MAAC foe Marist on Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y. The Blue and Gold dropped game one of the doubleheader, 5-4, before falling 6-4 (10 inns.) in the afternoon matchup. The Golden Griffins finish the regular season 14-31 overall and 8-12 in MAAC action, while the Red Foxes improved to 32-19 overall and 15-3 in conference play.
 
GAME 44
In the first game of the day, Marist opened up the scoring in the first inning when Brandi Coon singled through the left side to plate Caroline Barratta. The visitors increased their lead in the top of the third when Claire Oberdorf grounded out the second base to score Casey Page and Ali Miliam scored on a throwing error. The Blue and Gold cut the lead, 4-3, when sophomore Erin Hufford hit an RBI-single that plated senior Denver Keller and freshman Hannah Catallo-Stooks doubled to center field to score Hufford and sophomore Kara Paradowski.
 
The visiting half of the sixth inning saw a Kayley Coltrain solo shot to right center increasing Marists' lead, 5-3. Paradwoski answered with a solo shot of her own in the home half of the frame, but it wasn't enough as the Red Foxes secured the win, 5-4.
 
Paradowski was the only Griff to notch a multi-hit game, while Hufford. Catallo-Stooks, Keller and redshirt-junior Lauren Castro tabbed a hit.
 
Castro took the loss in the circle for Canisius, as she allowed five runs and on 10 hits while fanning one in 7.0 innings of work.
 
Game 45
Canisius struck first in the second game, scoring runs on a Castro three-run home run in the first inning. Coltrain hit her second homer of the day in the second frame to bring the Red Foxes within striking distance, 3-1. Marist added another run in the visiting-half of the sixth when Oberdorf doubled to left center to score Coon. Canisius senior Molly McGuire added to the Canisius lead with single up the middle that scored junior Gianna Degaltini in the sixth inning. Mairst tied things up, 4-4, in the seventh thanks to a Baratta two run homer over the right field fence.
 
The squads entered extra innings locked at four, with Marist earning the victory in the visiting-half of the tenth thanks to an Oberdorf RBI triple.
  
Castro, McGuire and Paradowski each recorded a multi-hit game in the second loss of the day. Four other Griffs tabbed a hit in game two as well.


Freshman Alexis Churchill started game for Canisius as she allowed four runs on 10 hit while striking out one in 9.0 innings. Redshirt-freshman Shealyn Ollison made an appearance in the circle as well, allowing two runs on four hits.
 
Game Notes
• Saturday marked the 50th and 51st all-time meetings between the two schools, with Canisius leading the series 31-20.
• Paradowski's homer in game one is the first in her career, she also leads the team in multi-hit games (11) and stolen bases (38).
