Team Effort Leads to Women's Lacrosse Win Over Iona

Senior Jourdan Roemer scored four goals and assisted on two others to help lead the Golden Griffins (1-12, 1-4) to their first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win of the season, defeating Iona 15-12 in front of the home crowd Saturday afternoon.
 
Joining Roemer on the score sheet was graduate-student Jen Reininger who found the back of the net three times to bring her season total to 18, while sophomore Marissa Malvaso and freshman Katie Smolensky each tallied two goals in the win. Smolensky assisted on two goals for a four-point afternoon. In the cage, freshman Shannon Maroney stopped 11 of Iona's 25 shots.
 
As a team, Canisius was successful on 13 of its 14 clear attempts, caused eight turnovers and won the draw control battle 22-7. The Griffs' also picked up 24 ground balls, compared to just 18 for the Gaels.
 
Iona was led by Madi Kochanek, Emma Rippon, and Leah Marshall, who combined for 10 of the Gaels 12 goals. Kochanek recorded four goals, while Rippon and Marshall each had three in the contest. Christine Gironda recorded a team-high three assists in the loss. Netminder Shannon McCaffery became Iona's all-time saves leader as she stopped 13 shots on the afternoon and recorded a .464 save percentage.
 
Canisius found themselves in an early 1-0 hole as Iona recorded the first tally of the game one and a half minutes in. The Griffs, however, wasted no time to respond as Smolensky and Roemer each found the back of the net to give Canisius a 2-1 advantage.
 
Iona took a 3-2 lead following a free-position goal from Marshall at the 20:44 mark, but Canisius answered with a quick 2-0 run of its own to retake the lead three minutes later as Roemer tallied her second goal of the game.
 
After trading goals, Canisius broke off a 3-0 run that was powered by two goals from Reininger to give Canisius an 8-5 lead in the first half. The Golden Griffins would end up taking a 9-6 lead into the locker rooms following an own goal from Iona.
 
Canisius scored the first goal of the second half to make it a four-goal game, however, Iona would work its way back with a 4-0 run, highlighted by two goals from Rippon and one each from Kochanek and Marshall, tying the game at 10.
 
With the game now tied at 11-apiece, junior Rachel Ryan worked her way inside and scored to give Canisius the 12-11 lead. Then, just 58 seconds later, Bryar Cummings made it a two-goal game for the Blue and Gold as she scored for the first time on the afternoon.
 
Iona would get one back at the 7:19 mark, but the Griffs would score the final two goals of the game to determine the final margin.
 
Head Coach Allison Daley's Postgame Comments
"I think the difference today was down the stretch when we saw Iona climb back, but we were able to play with poise and execute in different areas on the field, with defensive stops, our transition game and executing offensively."
 
Game Notes
• Canisius is now 15-0 all-time against the Gaels following Saturday's victory.
• Roemer tied Erica Evans for second place on the Golden Griffins all-time points list, with 246 career-points. The Irondequoit, N.Y., product needs just six more points for the record.
• To go along with her three goals, Reininger won six draw controls, picked up six ground balls and caused three turnovers.
• Cummings led the team with a total of nine draw controls. The Cicero, N.Y., native also picked up three ground balls and caused two turnovers.
• Maroney recorded her third 10-plus save game of the season.
• Smolensky tallied four or more points for the third consecutive game.
• Marissa Malvaso scored two goals for the third straight game.
 
Up Next
Canisius travels to West Long Brancn, N.J., to take on the Hawks of Monmouth. The game will be aired on ESPN3, with action starting at 12 p.m.
