Game Recap: Men's Lacrosse |

Men’s Lacrosse Knocks Off League-Leading Quinnipiac, 10-7

Junior Carter Stefaniak recorded a hat trick to pace Canisius to a 10-7 victory over league-leading Quinnipiac in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference men's lacrosse action Saturday at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo, N.Y.

Stefaniak's three-goal effort highlighted an otherwise balanced offensive attack for the Golden Griffins (6-5, 2-1 MAAC) as senior Mario Caito and junior Mathieu Boissonneault chipped in two goals each while senior Layne Collins added a goal and two assists. Freshmen Jacob Buck and Jake Lemon accounted for the other two Canisius tallies.

Will Abbott tallied three goals to lead the Bobcats (6-4, 3-1 MAAC), who saw their six-game winning streak come to an end with Saturday's setback. Foster Cuomo, the MAAC Preseason Player of the Year, was held off the scoresheet for the first time this season.

Quinnipiac goalie Nick DiMuccio made 13 saves in the contest, including 11 in the second half while senior Brad Nordstrom recorded seven stops between the pipes for Canisius.

Canisius never trailed in the contest as Lemon and Boissonneault struck just 50 seconds apart to give the Griffs a two-goal cushion less than two minutes in.

Stefaniak stretched the Canisius lead to three a little more than two minutes later before Matt Frost answered right back for Quinnipiac to make it a 3-1 contest.

The Griffs regained momentum moments later, using goals from Caito and Stefaniak to close out the first-quarter scoring and spark a 6-1 spurt that stretched into the opening minutes of the third and gaveCanisius its largest lead of the game, 9-2.

Tyler Mackey stopped the Griffs run and ignited a Quinnipiac comeback attempt, notching his 13th of the campaign at the 10:24 of the third to send the Bobcats on a 5-0 run that trimmed the Canisius cushion with 13:23 remaining.

The score remained unchanged until Caito put the game out of reach, recording his second of the game with 2:27 to play to halt the Quinnipiac comeback attempt and determine the three-goal margin of victory.

Head Coach Mark Miyashita's Postgame Comments
"It was a tremendous team effort today. The guys did a great job in all facets today: on offense, getting to double digits. Defensively, holding them to single digits with the high-powered attack they've had in the past few games. At the faceoff X, Daniel (Balawejder) did a great job on neutralizing their primary faceoff guy, who was 60 percent on the season coming into the game and making it a 50-50 battle. Overall, it was an all-out team effort today.

"The poor showing we had the other night at Cleveland State motivated us to come out and get off to a quick start today. Obviously, that was a quick turnaround game, but the guys were really disgusted after the game at Cleveland State with how they played. We finished that game strong and we came back with three really-good days of practice, probably our best of the year. Our guys were in good spirits, they liked the game plan and they were excited to play today.

"We made a few mistakes on the offensive end in the third quarter that led to some possessions for Quinnipiac that ended up translating into goals. As an offensive group, we talked about being smarter with the ball, especially with our shot selection, and not putting our defense on their heels because we know that they were going to make a run and then they started to, it was important that we really did not want to allow them to build enough momentum to where they could get all the way back into the contest."
